Warmth emitted from Thalion’s hand as he took ahold of mine, leading me away from the grandiose event and outside the palace into a different area that left me unsettled. This path was bathed in darkness, illuminated by a massive fountain spilling water high into the air like fireworks.

We take our seats at the edge of the fountain, an icy sensation washing over my body from the cold stone. Unease curdled in my chest, “Why did you bring me here, Prince Thalion?”

He raised his head, gazing upon the vast sky. “I assumed that you needed a break from smiling, especially when it never reached your eyes.”

An itch flared along my collarbone, agitated by others reading my mind so easily. Arching a challenging brow at him, “What about you? You always wear your hair in a bun but tonight you wore it down.”
