In the aftermath of the explosion, the fury of the already enraged Graveler intensified to its peak.
In the next moment, bright white light radiated from the Graveler—not the glow of evolution, but the ominous light of Self-Destruct!
Self-Destruct is an immensely powerful move with incredible destructive force, but it leaves the user in a near-fainted state afterward. The sheer power of a move that demands such a hefty price is naturally devastating.
The real challenge lies in the fact that this volatile skill is wielded by a group of highly temperamental Pokémon, and Graveler is notorious for its explosive temperament.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Like an unending barrage of fireworks, explosions erupted in quick succession.
The ground trembled violently, and the entire Moon Mountain quaked as if an apocalyptic event had begun.
"What in the world is happening?!"
A patrolling team of rangers froze momentarily, stunned by the sudden shockwave.
However, years of rigorous training quickly snapped them back into action. They scrambled to report the unfolding chaos but were abruptly ambushed. Emerging from the dense bushes, Pokémon such as Scyther, Persian, Arbok, and Weezing attacked with ruthless precision. Each of these Pokémon had strength nearing the Advanced level, overwhelming the rangers.
Before the rangers could fully comprehend or counter the ambush, they were swiftly defeated.
"I never imagined we'd get the chance to hunt rangers like this. What a thrill!" Masuyama exclaimed gleefully, staring at the incapacitated rangers sprawled on the ground.
"Calm down, Masuyama. This is just the beginning. The real challenge is still ahead," Murakami interjected with a stern tone. He turned to Will, the most composed of their group.
"Will, is the signal jamming in place?"
Will nodded. "It's operational, but the Alliance will catch on to the disruption soon. We need to move quickly."
"That's enough for now," Murakami replied. "Let's regroup with Torre and Cass. We'll focus on extracting as many Moon Stones as possible."
The group began to converge on their prearranged location.
Torre and Cass, who had previously baited the Gravelers into triggering their Self-Destruct, were part of the same team. This team were seasoned Pokémon hunters, known for operating brazenly rather than in secrecy.
All Pokémon hunters had elite-level Pokémon, with their leader, Murakami, commanding two such Pokémon.
While elite-level Pokémon might not sound intimidating at first, reaching this tier marks the qualifications for becoming a gym trainer. Their strength allowed these hunters to capture many rare and powerful Pokémon, as well as target unsuspecting trainers.
Over the years, their actions made them a high-priority target for the Pokémon League, earning them wanted status. Despite the danger, the hunters boldly set their sights on Mount Moon, home to a rich reserve of Moon Stones.
Under normal circumstances, the rangers stationed here could easily repel such threats. Though the rangers only had elite-level Pokémon themselves, Mount Moon's proximity to Pewter City ensured rapid reinforcements. This deterrent discouraged most criminal activity in the area.
But these hunters were prepared.
The chaotic explosions served a dual purpose: creating confusion and inciting a Pokémon riot.
A riot occurs when wild Pokémon, sensing a significant threat to their lives, stampede in panic. Any obstacle—be it people or Pokémon—risks being crushed or attacked in the frenzy.
"Keep trying to contact the ranger station in Pewter City. The Alliance can't ignore a communication blackout for long," Kai, the lead ranger, instructed his team.
"Meanwhile, the rest of you, come with me! We need to protect the trainers on Mount Moon and stop this riot. Be on high alert—we could be dealing with Pokémon hunters or even Team Rocket. They won't hesitate to ambush us."
"Yes, sir!"
The rangers sprang into action. Their strategy was to scatter and guide the wild Pokémon into smaller groups, breaking up the horde. By separating them, they could eventually subdue and calm the Pokémon, who would then return to their natural habitats.
While the rangers worked diligently to manage the chaos, the five hunters made their way deeper into Mount Moon.
The usual ranger patrols were absent, drawn away by the riot outside. With no one to hinder them, the hunters reached their target.
"Oh wow, look at this haul!" Masuyama exclaimed, awestruck at the sight of countless Moon Stones glimmering in the dim cave.
"Stop gawking and get to work," Murakami snapped. "We need to collect as many as possible, as quickly as possible. If we're lucky, we might even snag some wild Pokémon to sell along with the stones."
With the help of their Pokémon, the hunters began mining and loading the Moon Stones into their specialized space backpacks.
Meanwhile, Kai and his rangers clashed with the stampeding wild Pokémon, narrowly saving several trainers caught in the chaos.
"Follow this path down the mountain and head straight to Pewter City. Alert the police and rangers there about the situation on Mount Moon!" Kai instructed the rescued trainers.
"Thank you! We'll hurry!" the trainers replied, shaken but grateful as they made their escape.
With the trainers safe, Kai refocused on dispersing the riot.
"It seems the source of the disturbance is near this cave," a voice murmured softly nearby.
It was Tyson, who had been observing from a concealed position.
Having arrived at Mount Moon just before the riot began, Tyson quickly deduced the epicenter of the chaos. Though he didn't know whether it was the work of Pokémon hunters or Team Rocket, the purpose was obvious: the Moon Stones.
Tyson smirked. He had no intention of letting them claim all the spoils. The Moon Stones were a resource he wouldn't mind obtaining himself.
