Chapter 36: A Safe Heaven

As they drove through the night, Aurélie felt a sense of relief wash over her. They had escaped the syndicate, at least for now.

Sophie drove in silence, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. Léon sat beside her, his eyes scanning the rearview mirror for any sign of pursuit.

Aurélie sat in the backseat, her mind racing with thoughts and emotions. She was scared, but she was also determined. She knew that they couldn't stay hidden forever, but for now, she was just grateful to be safe.

As the hours passed, the city gave way to countryside, and the countryside gave way to rolling hills and dense forests. Aurélie felt a sense of peace settle over her, a sense of being far away from the dangers of the city.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Sophie turned off the main road and onto a small dirt track. The car bounced and jolted over the rough terrain, but Aurélie didn't care. She was just grateful to be safe.

As they crested a small hill, Aurélie saw it: a small cottage, nestled among the trees. Smoke was rising from the chimney, and a light was on in the window.

Sophie smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Welcome to our safe haven," she said.

Léon turned to Aurélie, his eyes warm with relief. "We're safe here," he said. "At least, for now."

Aurélie smiled, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. She knew that they couldn't stay hidden forever, but for now, she was just grateful to be safe.

As they stepped out of the car and into the cool night air, Aurélie felt a sense of hope rising up inside her. Maybe, just maybe, they could start anew, leave their pasts behind and build a brighter future.

But as they walked towards the cottage, Aurélie couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. She looked around, but saw nothing.

Just the trees, swaying gently in the breeze.
