Chris sat on his bed, staring blankly at the wall. His friends, Iyiola, Amaka, and Enoch, his roommate, were all seated in the room, trying to engage him in conversation. However, Chris remained unresponsive, his eyes cast downward.
"Chris, what's wrong?" Enoch asked for the umpteenth time, his voice laced with concern.
Chris remained silent, his lips pursed together in a stubborn line. His friends tried to coax him into talking, but he refused to budge.
As the silence stretched on, Iyiola and Amaka decided to leave Chris alone, hoping he would come around eventually. "We'll give him some space," Iyiola whispered to Amaka as they exited the room and headed to their hostel.
"We'll check on him later," Amaka added, casting a worried glance at Chris.
Enoch lingered behind, determined to get to the bottom of Chris's mysterious melancholy. "Chris, come on, man. What's going on? You can't just shut me out like this."
Chris finally spoke up, his voice devoid of emotion. "Nothing, I just want to be alone."
Enoch's eyes narrowed. He knew Chris was pretending, but he didn't want to push him further. "Alright, man. I'll give you some space."
The next day, Saturday, dawned bright and early. Enoch was jolted awake by the loud ringing of Chris's phone. Groggily, he reached over to check the screen and was immediately alert. "Roseline" flashed on the screen, accompanied by a love emoji.
Enoch's eyes snapped to Chris, who was still fast asleep beside him. "Chris, wake up! Roseline's calling."
Chris stirred, rubbing his eyes. "I don't want to talk to her."
Enoch's curiosity was piqued. Something was definitely amiss. He tried to persuade Chris to pick up the call, but Chris was adamant.
As they went about their morning devotion, Enoch couldn't shake off the feeling that something was seriously wrong. After they finished, he turned to Chris with a determined look.
"Chris, I need to ask you something. What's going on? You've been acting strange since Freshers' Night, and now you're avoiding Roseline's calls. What happened?"
Chris hesitated, then nodded slowly. "I'll tell you, but you have to promise not to tell Amaka and Iyiola."
Enoch's curiosity was killing him, but he promised to keep Chris's secret. "I promise. Now, spill the beans."
Chris took a deep breath, a faraway look in his eyes.
"Yesterday, at Freshers' Night... I was waiting for Roseline outside the hall, and when she arrived, she took my breath away. She was wearing this stunning purple dress that hugged her curves in all the right places, and her hair was styled in loose waves that framed her face perfectly."
Enoch chuckled "Finally you've gotten to the university and have decided to give love a trial" he said and furthered . "You're a goner, man."
Chris chuckled, feeling a little self-conscious. "Shut up. Anyway, we walked into the hall together, and it felt like we were on top of the world. We danced and laughed together, and I couldn't take my eyes off her."
As the night wore on, the music got louder and the lights got brighter. Chris and Roseline found themselves lost in the moment, their bodies swaying to the beat as they gazed into each other's eyes. They danced to every song, their feet moving in perfect sync. Chris felt like he was floating on air, his heart soaring with every step.
At one point, they took a break from dancing and grabbed some drinks from the bar. As they sipped their drinks, Chris couldn't help but steal glances at Roseline. She was laughing and chatting with some friends, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Chris felt his heart skip a beat as he watched her.
As the night wore on, the crowd began to thin out, and the music slowed down. Chris and Roseline found themselves swaying to a slow song, their bodies close together. Chris felt Roseline's hand on his chest, her fingers tracing the contours of his muscles. He felt a shiver run down his spine as he looked into her eyes, seeing the spark of attraction that mirrored his own.
And then, in a moment that felt like time stood still, they shared a kiss. It was like the whole world had melted away, leaving only the two of them, lost in the magic of the moment. Chris felt like he was drowning in the depths of Roseline's eyes, his heart pounding in his chest.
But as the kiss ended and reality came flooding back, Chris felt a pang of uncertainty. What did it mean? Was it just a momentary lapse of judgment, or was there something more to it?
As they parted ways that night, Chris couldn't shake off the feeling that things had changed between them. He walked Roseline back to her hostel, his arm around her shoulders. They didn't say much, just enjoying the quiet of the night.
When they reached her hostel, Roseline turned to him and smiled. "Thanks for tonight, Chris. I had an amazing time."
Chris smiled back, feeling his heart skip a beat. "No problem, Roseline. I had an amazing time too."
And with that, they shared another brief kiss before parting ways. Chris walked back to his hostel, feeling like he was walking on air.
But now, as he sat in his room with Enoch, Chris couldn't shake off the feeling of uncertainty. What did the kiss mean? Was Roseline interested in him, or was it just a momentary lapse of judgment?
Enoch's voice cut through Chris's thoughts, bringing him back to reality. "Dude, you need to talk to her. Find out what's going on and clear the air."
Chris nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. "It was my first kiss and it felt strange to me, that is the reason I have been acting strange since then." He said.
As Chris sat there, lost in thought, Enoch's phone rang, breaking the silence. Enoch answered the call, listening for a moment before responding.
"Yeah, he's right here... Okay, I'll tell him."
Enoch hung up the phone and turned to Chris. "That was Amaka. She and Iyiola want to meet up with us later today."
Chris nodded, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe a distraction was what he needed right now.
But just as he was about to respond, Chris's phone rang again. He sighed, feeling a sense of dread. It was Roseline again.
"Hey, Roseline," Chris answered, trying to sound casual.
"Hey, Chris," Roseline replied, her voice sounding sweet and cheerful. "What's up?"
Chris hesitated, unsure of how to respond. What did she want? Was she interested in him, or was she just being friendly?
"Uh, not much," Chris replied, trying to play it cool. "Just hanging out with Enoch."
"Oh, cool," Roseline said. "I was thinking maybe we could meet up at the library to study for PHY101."
Chris's heart skipped a beat. She wanted to study together? That sounded innocent enough.
"Uh, yeah," Chris stuttered. "That sounds great."
"Awesome," Roseline replied. "I'll meet you at the library at 2 pm on Monday? We can review the notes for the upcoming test."
Chris nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "Sounds like a plan."
As he hung up the phone, Chris couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. He was excited to see Roseline again, but he was also nervous about what might happen.
Enoch raised an eyebrow as Chris turned to him. "What's up?"
Chris shrugged. "Roseline wants to meet up at the library on Monday to study for PHY101."
Enoch nodded. "That sounds like a good idea. You guys can review the notes together."
Chris nodded, feeling a sense of relief. Maybe this was exactly what he needed - a chance to clear the air and focus on their shared goal of acing the test.
But as he stood up to head to the library, Chris couldn't shake off the feeling that something more was at play.
The evening sun cast a warm glow over the campus as the four friends gathered in Enoch and Chris's room. They had planned to study together, but as they sat amidst scattered notes and textbooks, Amaka suddenly spoke up.
"Guys, I need to tell you something."
Her friends turned to her, curious. "What's up?" Enoch asked.
Amaka took a deep breath. "Tunde and I broke up."
The room fell silent. Chris and Enoch exchanged surprised glances, while Iyiola's eyes widened in shock.
"What happened?" Iyiola asked, her voice gentle.
Amaka shrugged. "It was mutual. We both agreed that the distance was too much to handle. We haven't seen each other in months, and it was taking a toll on our relationship. We didn't trust each other anymore."
The friends nodded sympathetically. They knew that Amaka and Tunde had been struggling with their long-distance relationship.
"But that's not all," Amaka continued, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Guess what happened at Freshers' Night?"
Enoch raised an eyebrow. "What?"
Amaka grinned. "A guy asked me out!"
The room erupted in cheers and congratulations. Chris and Enoch high-fived Amaka, while Iyiola squealed with excitement.
"Tell us more!" Iyiola demanded.
Amaka giggled. "His name is Yemi, and he's in my pharmacy department. He's really cute and charming. We talked for a bit, and he asked for my number. I was surprised, but I gave it out "
As Amaka mentioned Yemi's name, Iyiola's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, Yemi? As in, Yemi , he is Fair, tall and chubby?"
Amaka nodded. "Yeah, that's the one."
Iyiola's face turned bright red. "He came to ask me out too!, and I haven't gisted Enoch about it"
The room fell silent again, this time in shock. Amaka's eyes were wide with surprise, while Chris and Enoch exchanged amused glances.
"What?" Amaka exclaimed. "He asked you out too?"
Iyiola nodded, looking embarrassed. "Yeah, he did. I didn't hesitate to give him a No!" she furthered "my one and only Enoch for life"
The friends burst out laughing. "This is getting interesting!" Enoch exclaimed.
Just then, Amaka's phone buzzed, shrill in the silence. She looked at the screen, her eyes widening in surprise.
"It's him!" she shouted, her voice trembling with excitement.
The others turned to her, curious. "Who?" Chris asked.
Amaka's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Yemi!"
The room fell silent, the tension palpable. Iyiola's eyes narrowed, her expression thoughtful.
"What does he want?" Enoch asked, his voice low and cautious.
Amaka hesitated, her fingers hovering over the screen. "I don't know... but I think I'm going to find out."
With a deep breath, Amaka answered the call, her eyes locked on the others.
As she listened to Yemi's voice on the other end, her expression changed from excitement to shock... and then to something else entirely.
What's wrong....
