After several consideration, I proceeded to continue with the plan. I thought it was high time I told Diane about it. I was sitting on the couch in the living room. Luckily, she came to join me sitting next to me. I thought that would be the only chance I would have to inform her.
"What! A note? "She shouted and stood up from the sofa. Instead of her nagging me about not telling her all those days, she became more concerned about what I saw.
"Yes. A note. One of it stated "watch out!" And the other, "give up". It was all from Trev Electronics. "I explained.
"Trev Electronics? That is my father's place of work. Interesting! Then, does that mean the company is involved?" She asked.
"I have no idea. The words could mean anything. Do you have any clue that might link your mother to that company?" I asked.
"Honestly, I never knew my mother knew them one way or the other. But, does this not sound weird? It does not make sense at all. Why would they send my mother such notes?" She asked.
"Do you have your mother's phone with you?" I asked.
"Yes. But why?" She asked back.
"No, I was wondering if we could check her call logs to see if she had been contacted by them." I replied.
"That idea is brilliant. Wait here, let me bring her phone. "She ran inside her room while I sat there brooding over the reason I had to go that far. About few minutes later, she came with the phone.
"Oh no! I don't know her passcode. "She said. It was a whole hassle. "What should we do? Can you hack into her phone or what? I heard nerds are good at that. "She continued.
"Not all nerds are good at hacking. I did not learn it, so I can't. How about you try her personal details? Maybe like her birthday, something like that might work." I suggested. She tried her birthday, it did not work. Her name, it did not work. But, as she inputed her father's name, the phone unlocked.
"Oh jeez! It is my dad's. I can't believe she loved him even till the end. "Diane said as she nodded her head negatively. Without any hesitation, I checked all her call history and noticed the name "Mr. Thomas" had been calling her frequently. There were several missed calls by that person and various unread messages. Those messages were all irrelevant such as ' pick up '. I saw that particular message more than ten times. I also noticed that one of the messages was sent recently. So, it meant that the person did not know that Diane's mother was dead. Maybe it was for the best, we could use that against him.
"Do you have any idea who Mr. Thomas might be? Do you think he might be involved with Trev Electronics or he is just another party on his own?" I asked. Diane did not reply. She just stared at me, without her eyes blinking.
"You know what, let's call the number." I suggested. Diane gave me a nod. I took her phone and pasted the number to call. It rang.
"Just in case, record the call." I said as the person picked up.
"Yes, who is this?" He asked. His voice was deep and he sounded desperate to know who was calling him. As I was not quite good in talking to strangers, I asked Diane to speak to him.
"Excuse me, is this Mr. Thomas from Trev Electronics?" She asked. It was smooth.
"Yes, you are right, to whom am I speaking to?" He asked.
"My mother sent me to have a word with you sir." She replied. I could not relate to why she said that but I thought it might all be for the best.
"Your mother? Who is your mother?" The man asked.
"Mrs. Roosevelt Darnell." Oh! You must be Kate, how are you doing?" The man asked. Either or not her name was Kate, Diane continued.
"So, did your mother finally agreed to my proposal? If she did, that would be perfect. "The man continued.
"She did not tell me the full details, would you mind telling me about it?" She asked. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe Diane was smart. The man sounded like someone anyone could obtain information from, so it was better to make use of such opportunity.
"You know how things go, right? I can't tell you everything because of my boss but this is all what I can tell you. Your mother has a document from our company that could bring the whole company down. I have tried so hard to negotiate with her to hand it over but she did not. In order for problem not to arise, I think it is better for her to hand it over now. "He explained. He did not say everything but he said the key points. Those notes were threats!
"What if she refuses to?" Diane asked.
"Then, you know what will happen. We might use force. So, it is better you advice your mother..." Diane cut off the phone call. We broke into silence. It was not quite a great day. Maybe the real revenge starts there, I could see Diane's eyes in fire.
"Do you think the documents he mentioned were the one I saw at your house? I did not check everything but just the notes. I wish I had checked the content of the document. "I said.
"We have to retrieve back the document before the worse happens." She replied with no emotion showing on her face.
"Alright." I replied. Then, I noticed Diane calling someone.
"Who are you calling?" I asked curiously.
"I am calling the man back. I have to let him make a move. "She replied.
"Are you stupid? How can you say that? We don't know the deal they have and you want to call him back? What if something worse happens?" I asked. Diane insisted and called the man back. She told him the document was with her and there was nothing the man could do about it. She was really a badass, you know? Maybe because she was in a rush for revenge, then she expected everything to go in her way.
The whole matter turned to a puzzle. If Diane's mother had died, why was it that they had not been informed about it? Or, were they forming pretense, so they have something to act as an alibi when they are arrested? Nevertheless, I made a conclusion. Directly or indirectly, they were involved.
