The Road to Trouble

The grass of the Whispering Plains finally began to thin, giving way to scattered patches of rocky terrain. Xu Tian, feeling a rare surge of optimism, raised his arms triumphantly.

"We're out of the creepy whispering grass! Finally! It's smooth sailing from here!"

Yue Lin shot him a look. "You're tempting fate."

"Please, what could possibly go wrong now?" Xu Tian said with a grin.

In the distance, a series of craggy hills loomed, their jagged peaks casting long shadows over the landscape. As they approached, they saw the faint outline of an old wooden signpost, its surface weathered and cracked.

Wei Ling squinted at it. "That says…'Beware.'"

Xu Tian's grin vanished. "Okay, maybe I spoke too soon."

The group reached the signpost, which stood at the intersection of two paths. One led through a narrow, rocky valley; the other wound around the base of the hills, disappearing into a dense forest.

"Which way do we go?" Xu Tian asked.

Yue Lin examined the paths, her brow furrowing. "The forest looks like it could be a trap, but the valley's too narrow. If something ambushes us there, we'll have no room to maneuver."

Xu Tian groaned. "Why can't we ever have a clear, obvious choice? Like a sign that says, 'This way to safety.'"

Wei Ling flipped his coin. "Heads, the valley. Tails, the forest."

Before he could catch it, Xu Tian snatched the coin out of the air. "Enough with the coin! This is serious!"

Wei Ling smirked. "You're no fun."

Shen Feng stepped forward. "We take the valley. It's risky, but we'll have the high ground to scout ahead."

The group entered the valley, the high cliffs on either side casting ominous shadows. The air was unnervingly still, every sound they made echoing back at them.

"Why is it so quiet?" Xu Tian whispered.

"Probably because nothing lives here," Yue Lin said. "Or because something big ate everything that did."

"Fantastic," Xu Tian muttered.

As they advanced, the echoes grew more peculiar. Their footsteps sounded heavier, their voices distorted, as if the valley itself were mocking them.

"Okay, this is officially creepy," Xu Tian said.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the valley, followed by the sound of rocks tumbling.

"Was that us?" Xu Tian asked.

"No," Yue Lin said, drawing her weapon.

From the cliffs above, shadows began to move. Figures clad in mismatched armor and wielding crude weapons appeared, their faces obscured by masks.

"Bandits!" Wei Ling shouted.

The bandits didn't waste time with threats or demands. They leapt down from the cliffs, weapons drawn.

Xu Tian barely dodged a blade, stumbling backward. "Why is it always bandits?"

"Stop complaining and fight!" Yue Lin shouted, engaging two bandits at once.

Shen Feng parried a strike with his sword, his movements calm and precise. Wei Ling, meanwhile, was laughing as he ducked and weaved, his dagger flashing in the dim light.

Xu Tian clutched the Stabilizing Pearl and muttered, "Okay, time to shine. Don't let me down now!"

The pearl pulsed faintly, and a wave of energy burst outward, knocking the nearest bandit off his feet.

Xu Tian blinked in surprise. "Did I just do that?"

"Focus!" Yue Lin shouted, deflecting a spear aimed at her head.

Despite their numbers, the bandits were poorly coordinated. One by one, they began to retreat, shouting curses as they disappeared back up the cliffs.

As the last bandit fled, Xu Tian collapsed onto a rock, panting. "We're alive. I can't believe we're alive."

"You actually did something useful," Wei Ling said, clapping him on the back.

"Don't sound so surprised," Xu Tian grumbled.

Shen Feng inspected the area. "They left in a hurry. Something scared them."

"Yeah, us," Xu Tian said, puffing out his chest.

Yue Lin shook her head. "No. Something else."

As if on cue, the ground beneath them began to tremble. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the valley, shaking loose rocks from the cliffs.

Xu Tian's confidence evaporated. "Please tell me that's an earthquake."

"It's not an earthquake," Yue Lin said, her voice tense.

From the far end of the valley, a massive creature emerged. It was reptilian, with dark, glistening scales and glowing yellow eyes. Its jaws opened, revealing rows of jagged teeth, and it let out another bone-rattling roar.

Xu Tian stared in horror. "Why does everything here want to eat us?"

"Run!" Shen Feng shouted.

The group didn't need to be told twice. They bolted down the valley, the creature's heavy footsteps shaking the ground as it pursued them.

The valley narrowed even further, forcing the group to squeeze through a gap in the rocks. The creature, too large to follow, slammed into the cliffside with a frustrated roar.

Xu Tian collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. "I hate this place so much."

Yue Lin leaned against a rock, her expression grim. "That wasn't just a random beast. It was guarding something."

"Guarding what?" Xu Tian asked.

Shen Feng looked back at the blocked path. "We'll never know. And maybe that's for the best."

Wei Ling flipped his coin and caught it with a grin. "Heads, we keep moving. Tails, we take a nap."

Xu Tian groaned. "If you flip that coin one more time—"

The group's laughter echoed through the valley as they pressed on, the shadow of the beast still lingering in their minds.
