The valley eventually opened into a lush, green expanse dotted with wildflowers and scattered trees. In the distance, a small village came into view, its wooden houses nestled against a hillside. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys, and the faint hum of life carried on the wind.
Xu Tian squinted. "Are we sure that's not an illusion? Or some trap? Or another secret bandit base?"
Wei Ling tossed his coin into the air. "Heads, it's real. Tails, we're doomed."
Xu Tian snatched the coin midair. "Can you stop tempting fate for five minutes?"
Yue Lin scanned the village with her sharp eyes. "It looks ordinary enough. But let's not let our guard down."
As they approached the village, a group of children playing near the entrance spotted them and ran to alert the adults. Soon, a small crowd gathered, their expressions a mix of curiosity and caution.
An elderly man stepped forward, leaning heavily on a cane. His wrinkled face was framed by a long, snow-white beard, and his eyes sparkled with a mix of wisdom and mischief.
"Travelers! Welcome to Misty Vale Village!" the old man said, spreading his arms wide. "It's not often we get visitors."
Xu Tian gave a wary smile. "Uh, thanks. We're just passing through. No need to trouble yourselves."
"Nonsense!" the old man said. "You must be tired and hungry. Come, come! We insist."
Before they could protest, the villagers ushered them into the heart of the village, where a large table was quickly set up and laden with food.
Xu Tian eyed the spread with suspicion. "This feels way too convenient."
"Maybe they're just nice," Wei Ling said, already piling food onto his plate.
"Or maybe they're fattening us up to eat us later," Xu Tian muttered.
As the group ate, Xu Tian couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The villagers were friendly—too friendly. Their smiles never wavered, and their eyes seemed to follow the group's every move.
"Does anyone else feel like we're being watched?" Xu Tian whispered to Yue Lin.
"We are being watched," Yue Lin replied, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. "Stay alert."
The old man from earlier approached them, his cane tapping rhythmically against the ground. "So, what brings you to our humble village?"
"We're just passing through," Xu Tian said quickly.
The old man nodded. "I see. Well, you're welcome to stay the night. But I must warn you: don't wander the village after dark."
Xu Tian's stomach dropped. "Why not?"
The old man's cheerful expression didn't change. "It's for your own safety. That's all you need to know."
That night, the group was given a small house to stay in. As the village quieted down, an eerie stillness settled over Misty Vale.
Xu Tian lay on his mat, staring at the ceiling. "I don't like this. I really don't like this."
"Go to sleep," Yue Lin said from across the room.
"I can't. What if something happens?"
"Then I'll wake you up," Yue Lin replied.
Despite her reassurance, Xu Tian stayed awake, his ears straining for any unusual sounds. Just as he was starting to drift off, he heard it: a faint whispering, similar to what they had heard in the Whispering Plains.
Xu Tian sat up. "Did anyone else hear that?"
Wei Ling groaned. "Go back to sleep, Xu Tian."
"No, seriously! It's coming from outside!"
Reluctantly, the group got up and peered out the window. The village square was empty, but the whispering grew louder, seeming to come from the well in the center of the village.
"Should we check it out?" Xu Tian asked.
"No," Yue Lin said firmly. "The old man warned us not to wander."
"But what if someone's in trouble?"
Shen Feng sighed. "We'll go. But stay together."
The group crept to the well, their footsteps silent on the cobblestone path. As they got closer, the whispering grew clearer, forming disjointed words and phrases.
"...lost...forgotten...betrayed..."
Xu Tian shivered. "This is definitely not normal."
Yue Lin peered into the well, her face pale. "There's something down there."
"What kind of something?" Xu Tian asked nervously.
Before Yue Lin could answer, the whispering stopped. The silence was deafening, and the air grew heavy, as if the well itself were holding its breath.
Then, without warning, a pale hand shot out of the darkness, grabbing the edge of the well.
Xu Tian screamed.
The hand was followed by an arm, and then a figure emerged, cloaked in tattered robes. Its face was obscured, but its presence radiated a cold, otherworldly energy.
"Who dares disturb my slumber?" the figure hissed, its voice echoing unnaturally.
"We didn't disturb anything!" Xu Tian said, backing away. "We were just…passing by!"
The figure turned its head toward the group, its glowing eyes narrowing. "Lies. You seek the truth of this village."
"What truth?" Yue Lin demanded, her sword at the ready.
The figure pointed a skeletal finger at the well. "The truth lies below. But beware, for once you know it, there is no turning back."
Xu Tian gulped. "Can't we just, you know, not know the truth? Ignorance is bliss, right?"
The figure let out a hollow laugh. "You have already chosen your path. Prepare yourselves."
With that, it dissolved into mist, leaving the group shaken and more confused than ever.
Back in their temporary home, the group sat in tense silence.
"We're leaving at first light," Yue Lin said firmly.
"But what if the village is hiding something dangerous?" Xu Tian asked.
"Then it's not our problem," Yue Lin replied.
Shen Feng nodded. "She's right. We've already attracted too much attention."
Wei Ling flipped his coin. "Heads, we stay and investigate. Tails, we leave."
Xu Tian snatched the coin again. "Stop doing that!"
As the night stretched on, the group debated their next move, unaware that the village's secrets were already beginning to unravel around them.
