Ethan reassured himself, whispering, "It couldn't possibly be her. How could it? She ended our call abruptly yesterday. There's no way it's her."
I scoffed at Ethan's demeanor and yelled near his ear, "Ethan, quit fooling yourself. I'm the one who's gone. Don't you despise me? Why are you so hesitant to face reality now?"
After composing himself, Ethan stood up straight and exited the room.
As he stepped outside, Sandy approached him.
"Ethan, what's the situation?"
Ethan shook his head.
"Due to the fatality and our inability to reach the victim's family, the police denied bail. We need to get in touch with the deceased's relatives first."
Sandy grasped Ethan's hand, her eyes filled with concern.
"Do you think we have a chance with this case?"
Ethan nodded.
"If Alex is being truthful, and he wasn't speeding or fleeing the scene, it's just a road accident. The harshest penalty would be three years imprisonment."
