Adrian began with a remorseful tone, "Madeline, Sophie's struggling as a single mother. She's new here and I'm her only support."

His words stung. He seemed to forget that he was my sole support too.

"I see. She must be going through a tough time," I replied evenly.

"Madeline, what's that supposed to mean? Why the attitude?" His temper flared unexpectedly.

"I said I understand," I reiterated, my voice hardening, "Is that a problem?"

"Why are you talking to me like that?" he retorted.

"What would you prefer I say?" I responded, irritation rising.

A tense silence settled between us. Eventually, he muttered a resigned, "Do whatever you want," and ended the call.

The irony wasn't lost on me. He'd called me annoying for questioning his visits to Sophie. When I inquired about his return from her place, I was again the nuisance. Now, even my attempt at understanding upset him.
