Adrian didn't return until the following morning. Upon arrival, he immediately began to explain, "Jesse had a persistent high fever all night. It wouldn't subside."
Jesse was Sophie's offspring. The name sounded unfamiliar to me.
"Is the situation under control now? Why didn't you stay longer? It must be challenging for Sophie to care for an ill child by herself," I inquired, offering a brief nod.
Adrian halted while removing his jacket, a hint of irritation crossing his face. "Are you being cynical again?" He exhaled deeply, the sound laden with exhaustion, genuine or not, I couldn't discern. "Listen, I've been awake all night. I'm exhausted."
"Then you should rest. I'm heading to work." I turned and reached for my bag.
"Madeline..." He grasped me and spoke.
"What is it?"
"We'll celebrate our anniversary another time, alright?"
A faint smile played on my lips, devoid of emotion. "I'm not upset."
