I dialed Adrian's number, and he picked up instantly, exclaiming, "Madeline!"

He continued before I could utter a word, "Why didn't you respond to my calls? Where have you been? I went to our place, but you weren't there. I'm outside the medical center now."

"Yes, I'm at the hospital. I'm heading down now," I finally managed to say.

As I reached the entrance, Adrian's vehicle pulled up. He stepped out and approached me.

"Let's head home," Adrian said after taking the file from my grasp.

As I reached for the car handle, a familiar feeling of queasiness came over me. Not from motion sickness, but from what I saw. Sophie was sitting in the front passenger seat.

She grinned at me, somewhat apologetically and said, "I'm sorry, Madeline, I get terribly carsick. Would you mind taking the back seat?"

The nerve. Her boldness in intruding not just on my marriage, but now my personal space, was hard to stomach.
