The Demon's Return

It was a clear, cold night, Alric sat atop his horse, surrounded by knights and guards. He barely noticed the gifts carried behind them, meant for Princess Aria, nor did he care about the long journey ahead.
"Do I really need to marry Princess Aria?" Alric asked suddenly, his voice low and tight.
"It's what's best for the kingdom," King Arthur replied sharply, without looking at him. The king's focus was fixed on the road ahead.
Alric gritted his teeth but didn't respond. Guilt tugged at him, louder than his father's commands. His words to Cater—so harsh, so final—played over and over in his mind. He had ordered him to leave, but the ache in his chest had grown unbearable since then.
The forest around them grew darker, the trees towering overhead like silent sentinels. Suddenly, the procession halted.
"What's going on?" Alric asked, snapping out of his thoughts.
