That evening, everyone remained awake. We all gathered at the police station.

After providing my account, the crime scene investigators began collecting evidence from my in-laws' remains. The authorities confirmed that the abductor had accomplices, though only one had been apprehended so far. This type of incident—a vicious homicide—had the entire police force on high alert. They were committed to apprehending all involved parties.

Once the evidence gathering concluded, I reached out to a mortuary.

Anthony continued to ignore my attempts to contact him. I sent word about the funeral arrangements to his relatives and acquaintances.

However, I didn't bother notifying his uncle. He learned of the situation from another source and phoned me in a fury.

"Denise! Have you lost your mind? Despite your troubles with Anthony, his parents always treated you kindly! Is this how you show respect, eh? How could you use their deaths for some twisted prank?!"

I listened silently as he berated me, waiting for him to finish.

Then, I responded calmly, "I'm currently at the police station. I've just completed giving my statement and organizing the funeral. If you don't trust me, don't bother attending. I hadn't planned to inform you anyway."

There was a brief pause before he said quietly, "You're at the police station? Put an officer on the line!"

I was about to pass the phone to Officer Chavez beside me when I heard another officer's voice on the call.

"Mr. Joe Germann? This is the Memphis Central Police Department. We require your assistance regarding an investigation."

When Uncle Joe arrived at the station, I was still present.

Upon seeing me, he charged forward, shouting, "Denise! Why didn't you say anything? Why didn't you tell us it wasn't a hoax? You killed my brother and sister-in-law! You... You're a killer!"

I faced him, unwavering. "I did tell you. I even requested money from you. But Anthony convinced you not to believe me. Anthony murdered his parents, and you—you were his co-conspirator!"

His face drained of color, his lips quivering as he hurried past me.

I called out after him, "Uncle Joe, when I phoned you, the police were listening in!"

He didn't turn back, but I detected remorse in his demeanor.

Officer Chavez remained by my side.

I glanced at her, saying, "You can go now, Officer Chavez. I'll wait for the mortuary on my own."

She shook her head, her expression compassionate. "I can stay and keep you company, Ma'am."

As we waited, I contacted an attorney.

"Atty. Mullally, please prepare divorce papers for me. I'm ending my marriage to Anthony."
