Attorney Mullaly's voice sounded startled over the phone. "What's the rush? Is it critical?"

I bobbed my head, forgetting he couldn't see me. "Extremely critical."

After ending the call, I noticed Officer Chavez, the policewoman beside me, staring in disbelief.

I cast my eyes down, a rueful grin playing on my face. It was common knowledge that I adored Anthony wholeheartedly. It was equally well-known that he didn't reciprocate those feelings.

I remained until the mortuary staff arrived to retrieve the deceased. I accompanied them, completed the necessary documentation, and observed as the embalmers prepared and dressed my in-laws in fresh attire. Only then did I finally depart for home.

En route, I made a detour to collect the divorce documents.

Upon arriving home, I found Anthony and Debbie already there.

She was perched on my bed, while he knelt on the floor, meticulously tending to a small wound on her foot.
