Chapter 17
Grey had spent two months trying to master all the spells given to him, and he had made significant progress. He could now use his abilities seamlessly. Although his Earth magic was still weak, he compensated for that with his Wind and Fire magic, making him on par with an average Blue magic user.
The other thing he struggled with was the runic and portal symbols. He had practiced them relentlessly for two months, showing visible results. He could now draw runes capable of casting illusions.
However, his real challenge lay in the portal runes. He had tried repeatedly to inscribe symbols for a portal that would transport him to another world, but each attempt ended in failure.
Finally, everything changed. Inspiration struck, and at last, he was able to complete and activate the portal. Now, he stood before the glowing gateway, staring at the illuminating light with a wide smile as he watched his hard work bear fruit.
"Finally! After so long, I have finally been able to complete it!" Grey cheered, jumping around in excitement.
The light glowed brightly for two minutes before dimming and eventually vanishing. But Grey didn't mind. He could activate it at any time, as long as he had mana.
"I can activate it anytime as long as I have mana, which I have in surplus." He smiled, sitting down on his Earth-crafted chair and taking a chug from a canned drink of some sort.
"This drink tastes even better now that I've accomplished something big." He grinned, taking another swig.
After finishing the drink, he tossed the can upward with all his strength, watching it soar high. Then, in a flash, he shot out a thin stream of fire, igniting the can in midair. It burned as it fell toward the ground.
Before it landed, Grey quickly stepped forward, estimating the exact spot where it would fall. He placed his hand on the ground and used Earth magic to open a hole just in time. The scorched can fell into it, and with a flick of his fingers, he closed the earth back up before returning to his seat.
"Now that that's done, I need to come up with an excuse for Mum before I activate the portal and head out." Grey muttered, stroking his bare chin in thought.
For a few minutes, he paced the room, deep in contemplation. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't think of a convincing excuse to explain his departure.
With a sigh, he gave up and walked toward a wall. Placing his hand on it, he infused a little mana, and the wall parted open. He stepped through, and the entrance sealed itself shut behind him.
Now standing inside the small cave from which he had entered, Grey let out another sigh before walking out. As he made his way through the forest, his mind remained occupied with crafting an excuse.
"I think it would be wise to tell Mum that I have unlocked my affinities. I can't keep her in the dark forever. Sooner or later, the truth will come out. It's better she hears it from me than from someone else." He sighed again, stepping out of the forest's outskirts.
Keeping his head down, he walked in silence, still contemplating the best way to break the news. After twenty minutes, he finally arrived home. Twisting the doorknob, he walked in.
Inside, he found his mother frantically pacing around, gathering her belongings.
"Mum?" Grey called out as he approached. He noticed she was packing her bags. "Are you going somewhere?"
"Yes, honey. You know the factory I work at? They selected a few workers to go to another town for a project. I'll be away for a few weeks." Clara replied.
"A few weeks?" Grey echoed, a small smile playing on his lips.
"I'm sorry, honey. I know you'll be lonely, but this is important. If we complete the project perfectly, we will be rewarded handsomely, and you know how much we need the money right now. I also wish I could take you along, but I can't." Clara sighed, placing her hands on Grey's shoulders.
"It's okay, Mum. I'll be fine. I'm not a kid anymore. I'll take care of myself, so don't worry." Grey reassured her with a wide smile.
"Thank you, honey. I love you." Clara said, pulling him into a tight embrace.
"I love you too, Mum." Grey replied, returning the hug with a warm smile.
After a few moments, Clara pulled away and continued packing.
"Come help me, dear."
"I was planning on doing that." He smiled, moving to assist her in arranging her bags.
"So, when are you leaving?"
"Tomorrow at dusk. I'll be back in about three weeks or so." Clara replied. "Don't worry, the house is stocked with food, and I left five silver coins on the kitchen counter for your upkeep."
"Five silver coins? Isn't that too much? Do you have enough money to take care of yourself?" Grey asked, concerned.
"Don't worry, the factory authorities will cover our expenses." Clara assured him with a smile.
A few minutes later, they finished packing, setting the bags aside. Clara then headed into the kitchen to prepare dinner for the two of them to enjoy together.
That night, they ate and chatted happily for hours. When it grew late, they both retired to their rooms for the night.
