CHAPTER 16

The loud thumping of Bimeler stomping the snow from his shoes outside the front door awakened Paul. He sat up abruptly, and looked guiltily about the living room. The front door swung inward, and the aging man entered. His cheeks were pinked by the bite of the cold wind whipping from the North, and his eyes were haggard from worry.

Paul wiped at his eyes, dislodging the last vestiges of sleep from them. He sat up straight on the sofa. "No word on Jenny, yet, Andrew?" He asked.

"Nah!" The old man answered curtly, and slumped into an easy chair. "Least come mornin' the sheriff'll hav'ta start lookin' for her." There was little hope left in the old man, as he leaned forward, forlornly placing his chin into his hands.

"Patty not back yet?" Paul asked, glancing at his watch. "She's been out there a long time."

"Out where?" Bimeler asked, looking over the tips of his fingers.
