CHAPTER 44

Poppy pushed the door of the bar open and stepped inside. She moved further in and halted when she caught sight of Felix, who was seated at the counter, taking a puff of a cigarette.

She sighed softly and walked over, sitting next to him.

He glanced at her. "Thought you were never coming."

"Why are you smoking again?" she asked, reaching to grab the cig from him, but he slapped her hand away. "Look at you, Felix. You're not even getting enough sleep. You always have eye bags under your eyes. Is something wrong? Do you need help with anything? I'm a caregiver, you know, and if you're—"

"Poppy, I'm fine. I always am."

"But you're not. I've known you since I was little, and you just…you just started going down a spiral like this right in front of my eyes. You won't tell me anything, so I don't know what the problem or whatever is burdening you so much that you had to give in to smoking."
