A strong arm encircled my shoulders, pulling me to my feet. I turned to find myself eye-to-eye with Jaqin. His icy blue gaze was fixed on Damien, brimming with a quiet yet intense fury that set my pulse racing.

"How long have you been here?" I inquired, my voice trembling with a mix of shock and comfort.

Jaqin's typically stern countenance softened slightly as a faint smile played on his lips. "Since that fellow arrived with the bouquet," he responded, his tone level but with a sharp undertone.

I stared, still trying to make sense of it all. "So you witnessed everything?"

"Every single moment."

Damien, now noticing the proximity between Jaqin and me, rose to his feet, his face contorted with irritation. "Who's this guy?"

Jaqin's hold on me tightened, drawing me closer. "Her betrothed," he declared with a hint of sarcasm, his words carrying a clear challenge.
