The monotonous hum of the semi-truck's wheels on the asphalt was the sole sound breaking the tense quiet. As I watched the distant police lights fade through the window, my thoughts were in turmoil. We'd barely slipped away this time, but I knew it wouldn't last.
"I can't go on like this," I whispered, barely audible.
Daniel, next to me, turned. "What do you mean by that?"
I met his stern look. "I'm saying I need to leave. You're all putting yourselves at risk for me."
His expression hardened, but before he could respond, Sue chimed in from behind. "She might have a point. If she wants to go, let her."
Daniel shot Sue a piercing glare. "Nobody's going anywhere," he said sternly. "Not without my say-so."
I let out a frustrated sigh. "This isn't your call, Daniel. The cops are after me. If I stick around, we'll all end up caught eventually."
