Ava's Perspective
The stillness in the pack's residence had become my sanctuary, a brief respite from Alpha Hunter's constant scrutiny and Katherine's omnipresence. So when the silence was broken by a sharp rap on my infirmary door, I knew trouble was brewing.
I gingerly sat up, wincing at the pain in my side from the injury that had almost claimed my life and my unborn child. Gathering my composure, I called out, "Enter."
A medical assistant came in first, holding a small mobile device. "Luna, you have a call," she said softly, handing me the phone with a wary expression, clearly aware of the tension between the Alpha and me.
Hunter's voice was curt, his impatience evident before I could speak. "Ava, where are you? Katherine's staying with me for a few days due to some plumbing issues. I expect you back by nightfall."
His words cut deep, but I kept my voice steady. "I'll return when I'm released, Alpha."
