The Second Trial, The Trial of Wisdom

The cheers from the first trial still echoed in Noelle's ears as she walked off the battlefield, her body aching from the fight. 

She had won, but she knew this was just the beginning. The elders would not make the next challenge easy.

Noah walked beside her in silence. His expression was unreadable, but she could feel the weight of his gaze on her.

"You fought well," he finally said.

Noelle glanced at him. "That almost sounded like a compliment."

A ghost of a smile flickered across Noah's face, but it was gone in an instant. "You proved you can hold your own in combat. But strength alone won't make you a queen."

Noelle's muscles tensed. "You still don't believe I'm the rightful heir."

Noah didn't answer right away. He stopped walking and turned to face her. The torches lining the palace courtyard flickered, casting sharp shadows on his face.
