NEVER WILL I DO SO

"You don't need to take out your anger on that innocent teddy bear," a deep voice interrupted. "I'm here. Punish me instead."

Evelyn's leg froze mid-kick.

She knew that voice. She recognized it instantly. But… was she hallucinating? Or did she hear wrong?

Slowly, she lowered her foot and turned around.

The moment her eyes met his, her heart leaped. Carlos. He was here. He was real.

A smile almost broke onto her lips—almost—but then reality set in. The teddy bear.

Panic surged through her, and she quickly positioned her body in front of it, blocking the paper with his name scrawled across it.

"You're home," she said, forcing a small, awkward smile as she dropped her gaze to her hands, avoiding his eyes.

Carlos stepped closer, his sharp gaze scanning her disheveled hair, her flushed face, the raw emotions still lingering in her stance.

"Punish me," he repeated, his tone unreadable. "I'm here."

From the side, his secretary nearly choked on air.

Did the boss just say… what I think he said? He looked between Carlos and Evelyn, his mind struggling to process the scene. Is something wrong with him?

Evelyn, sensing the shift in the room, let out a nervous laugh.

"Aha! Don't get the wrong idea," she said quickly. "Actually, I… I missed you so much that I had to—uh—replace you with this teddy bear."

She knew she was terrible at lying. And Carlos—of all people—would see right through it.

The silence that followed made her glance up. His expression had changed. His eyes, already cold, had darkened further.

He knew.

Evelyn's heart clenched. She curled her fingers into fists. "I was angry," she admitted, voice quieter. "I thought you abandoned me here."

She twisted her hands together, trying to muster her usual courage. But the way his gaze had turned cold made her shiver.

Carlos' eyes flickered downward—to her trembling hands.

A strange, unfamiliar ache settled in his chest.

She was scared of him. She, of all people.

He stepped forward, closing the distance between them. His voice, though quiet, was firm.

"I didn't abandon you," he said. "And I never will."
