"I didn't abandon you, and I never will."
Those words echoed in Evelyn's mind, refusing to fade.
She sat in a daze, staring blankly ahead. What does that even mean? Was he just reassuring her not to get the wrong idea? Or… was there something more?
With a deep sigh, she turned to the calendar. Time is running out, and despite everything, she hadn't seen any real changes in him.
Frustration crept in.
She picked up her phone, scrolling through her saved screenshots. Her eyes landed on a single word.
A slow, mischievous smile spread across her lips.
Meanwhile, in the study, Gavin walked in alongside his boss, only to burst into laughter.
"What? Punish you?" he repeated, his voice shaking with amusement. "That's rare coming from you, Carl."
Carlos, however, remained completely unfazed, his expression as icy as ever.
Gavin wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. "I guess our little princess is doing her job well. Are you sure she won't get pregnant before the three months are up?" He grinned. "Your eyes are already screaming I like her. I like her."
Carlos said nothing.
But after a beat, in a cold, quiet voice, he muttered, "She's scared of me."
Gavin's smile faded slightly, his gaze flickering with something unreadable.
Evelyn tossed and turned on the massive bed, waiting.
She had gone to bed earlier than usual, but sleep refused to come. Where is he?
Tonight, she had a plan. A mission. And she was determined to see it through.
She lay in silence for what felt like an eternity before finally hearing footsteps.
Her eyes snapped open.
The room remained dark, but she knew—he was here.
Carlos stood near the window, his broad back facing her, dressed in his usual black pajamas. Hands tucked into his pockets, his posture was unreadable.
To her surprise, he wasn't holding his usual cold glass of wine.
Now's my chance.
If she looked into his eyes, she might lose her words, so she spoke quickly.
"Thank you for coming back so soon," she said softly.
Carlos, who had been motionless for a while, finally turned to face her.
For a moment, Evelyn was caught off guard.
His silver eyes.
They were captivating—breathtaking.
She got lost in them for longer than she intended before snapping back to reality. 'Focus, Evelyn. The plan.'
But then she saw it.
A frown.
Her heart skipped a beat. Did I say something wrong?
She swallowed, suddenly nervous. "I'm glad you didn't abandon me," she added gently, watching him closely.
Carlos continued staring at her, his expression unreadable.
Why is he frowning? Did she mess up somehow?
Evelyn hesitated, then took a shaky breath.
"And… I missed you."
