Harriet's Perspective

From their point of view, my refusal to stand when a supposed "prince" from Washington entered was a clear sign of disrespect, something they were certain would result in my punishment.

But I didn't budge. Instead, I looked at Vernon and asked quietly, "Is it really necessary for me to stand?"

Vernon paused, his eyes narrowing as he examined me. He rubbed his eyes and looked again, his expression changing dramatically.

Before he could speak, Astrid jumped in with a sneer, "Vernon, this woman is my fiancé's former girlfriend. Simply put, she's nothing more than a pitiful pet. I kept her around for amusement. You're aware I run a kennel, right? I was planning to throw her to the dogs later for entertainment."

Damian's face went white. He gritted his teeth and whispered, "Astrid, what about your promise?"
