Chapter 7:
Ms. Aikawa: One more thing before you leave. In 2 months we will hold a tournament to determine your rank. There will also be a written exam.
Seito: Are we going to be facing everyone in our year?
Ms. Aikawa: It will be broken up into two stages. The first part will consist of 2 games. We will split all 100 students into 2 groups of 50 students. The top 6 of each group will move on to the next stage. Then there will be a knockout tournament, you will fight an opponent one on one. The winner advances to the next fight. How well you perform in the tournament will affect your score. Each opponent you take out will be worth 1 point, there will also be placement points. The longer you survive and the more opponents you eliminate, the more points you gain.
Jynn: Will we be randomly selected to battle our opponent?
Ms. Aikawa: Indeed. Teaming is also allowed, but if you decide to team up you will have to betray your teammate in the end.
Kanata : Doesn't this put support types at a disadvantage? Most support types aren't capable of handling a single opponent by themselves.
Ms. Aikawa: If a support type does get into a fight, there will be no advantage. This is just to test combat skills.
Jynn (in her head): Looks like my best bet is to lay low until the final 10.
Ms. Aikawa: If a support type decides to team up with someone, they will be given points depending on how much they help the other person. If they need healing they will be given 10 points per heal, but they are only allowed to heal once during a battle.
Seito: So our best chance of winning this will be to play solo. Having a teammate doesn't benefit us much.
Ms. Aikawa: Indeed. This is mainly to test your own ability to fight.
Nendai: Are we allowed to go all out during this tournament?
Ms. Aikawa: You will not be trying to kill each other like in usual battles. Instead, you will have to attempt to obtain your opponent's bell, you are allowed to use any means necessary. The only rule is to not kill the opponent. Every bell you obtain is one point. If your bell is taken you are eliminated.
Seito: I thought we just had to knock everyone out, but now it seems we have to grab a bell? So much more work.
Nendai: It seems a lot harder than just eliminating your opponent. If that's the goal, no one will just run around looking for people, they'll look for easier ways to grab the bell.
Seito: Like setting up traps.
Ms. Aikawa: You are correct. This is also to determine how well you can fool the opponent. (In her head) They're catching on faster than expected, normally most find out on the day of the test.
Kanata: What kind of environment will we be fighting in?
Ms. Aikawa: That will be disclosed on the day of the test. That is all you need to know for now. Everything will be explained again throughout the day. Before we begin, you have 2 months to prepare.
Nendai: What about the second part of this test?
Ms Aikawa: That information is irrelevant for now. Although it will take place 3 days after the first part.
Kazuo (in his head): So this test will be pretty difficult, either you can go around looking for bells or you wait until the last moment to take the remaining bells. By waiting until the last few, the ones who fought a lot will be exhausted leaving them at a disadvantage...
Nendai: Kazuo, let's go.
Kazuo: Alright.
