Chapter 4

I was bewildered by her sudden anger, unable to comprehend the reason behind it.

Previously, during a rainy day when she was with Remy, I had phoned several times to inquire about her whereabouts and return time, even proposing to pick her up.

She had been irate, claiming I was needlessly concerned, asserting that she was with Remy who would ensure her safe return.

She had also blamed me for being unable to tolerate her spending time with Remy, using the rain as a pretext to make her come home early, and accusing me of stifling her with my controlling behavior.

Now that I was granting her the independence she desired and refraining from worry, she was questioning why I wasn't coming to get her. I was truly perplexed by her expectations.

I responded calmly, "You're in Remy's company, so there's no cause for concern. Feel free to stay out longer if you wish, he'll certainly see you home safely."

Xena gazed at me with astonished eyes, perhaps marveling at how I could speak so composedly about Remy and allow them to remain out late together.

Shortly after, she appeared to recall something and began explaining, "Today marks the anniversary of Remy's mother's passing. He's deeply upset, and as his friend, I couldn't bear to leave him alone. Please don't misinterpret the situation."

I nodded understandingly. "I see. You should definitely keep him company on such occasions."

My reasonable response seemed to leave Xena at a loss for words.

She scrutinized my face intently, searching for even a trace of anger, but found none.

Xena softened her tone, "Ezra, I purchased a new nightgown. It's black lace. Would you like to see how it looks on me?"

I looked at her with surprise. This was equivalent to her actively seeking reconciliation.

In the past, she always maintained a haughty attitude, only grudgingly making amends after I had pleaded numerous times.

I feigned ignorance of her implication and simply stated, "That's not necessary. If you like it, that's all that matters. You should return to your room and get some rest now."

Xena stared at me in disbelief, then stormed off, feeling embarrassed and angry.

I got up to shut the door myself, then returned to bed.

I slept peacefully that night.

The following morning, my friend Mike called to invite me to dinner.

He had just returned from a work trip and, hearing of my impending departure, wanted to meet one last time, stating such opportunities would be scarce in the future.

I felt a twinge in my heart as I listened, and agreed.

Before ending the call, he added, "Oh, bring Xena along too. I won't contact her separately."

Indeed, Mike wasn't just my friend, but Xena's as well.

He had been the one to introduce us initially.

However, this meant I could no longer keep my return home a secret. I hadn't finished addressing everything and wanted to avoid complications.

After hanging up, I noticed Xena emerging from her room.

I paused briefly, then looked up and informed her, "Mike wants to invite us to dinner tonight."

She glanced at me hesitantly, about to speak when her phone rang.

I couldn't hear what the caller said, but Xena responded reassuringly, "Remy, don't worry. It won't be lost. I'll come over right away to help you search."

Xena ended the call and hurriedly walked towards the exit, quickly changing her shoes while telling me, "Ezra, Remy has an urgent matter and needs my assistance. You should go to dinner by yourself tonight. I won't be able to make it. Please inform Mike for me."

That evening, at a local barbecue restaurant, just as Mike and I were toasting with our beer glasses, Xena entered with Remy by her side.

When our eyes met, Xena appeared surprised and embarrassed.

Remy, standing next to her, flashed me a defiant smile.
