Chapter 9

As I arrived home in the late hours, the day's work finally behind me, I was surprised to find Jack seated in the unlit living area.

"What's with the darkness?" I inquired, startled by his unexpected presence.

"Why did you leave town by yourself?" he retorted, his voice tinged with disappointment.

His query was so unexpected that I momentarily doubted my hearing.

"Come on, it was work-related. Got an urgent call this morning—couldn't avoid it," I replied, growing impatient.

"Can you blame me for being concerned, given the current state of affairs?" His worry now seemed more like an irritation.

A month prior, Jack was working late at his office.

I awoke to noises at our entrance. The digital viewer revealed a suspicious individual outside.

Frightened, I alerted the authorities.

While retrieving a kitchen blade for self-defense, I also phoned Jack to caution him against returning.

However, Lily answered.

Her voice saccharine, she explained Jack was bathing and unavailable.
