Chapter 10

It was evident that Jack hadn't returned home the previous night.

If he had, he wouldn't be messaging me to collect him from his workplace.

"Shall we visit that eatery you've been wanting to try?" his text read.

I perused his message while thoroughly enjoying the send-off celebration my colleagues had organized for me.

My belongings were already packed at the company accommodations, prepared for my impending relocation.

Following this weekend, I'd be departing to commence my new position.

"Not necessary, I'm currently socializing with my coworkers."

After a moment, Jack responded, "Are relatives welcome at these gatherings?"

Observing my colleagues' family members around me, I replied decisively, "No, they're not."

I recalled how Jack used to strive to integrate when he first started his job, never skipping a dinner.

All other attendees arrived as pairs, yet Jack was consistently alone.
