Mrs. Carter was walking towards our car.
Nathan got out and opened the door for me, introducing, "This is Lena."
I quickly greeted Mrs. Carter, "Hello, ma'am. I've brought a gift for you."
Nathan took the gift from my hand and passed it to his mother.
Mrs. Carter beamed, "Thank you, thank you, thank you Lena."
Nathan put his arm around my shoulder as we walked into the house, with Mrs. Carter linking arms with Nathan, looking like a happy family.
I felt a bit awkward, but also happy.
Once in the living room, I sensed Mrs. Carter constantly staring at me.
At first, I thought it was just my imagination, but it became more and more obvious.
I started to feel self-conscious.
When Nathan brought me something to eat, she stared at me.
When Nathan told his mom about my school life, she stared at me.
When Nathan pulled me down to sit, she was still staring at me.
Finally, she even suggested taking me to the study for a look.
I was a bit bewildered.
