Into The Depths Of The Mine

The entrance to the mine loomed before them, a yawning black mouth in the side of a rocky hill.

The air was thick with the stench of decay and sweat, and Lucas felt a shiver run down his spine. They were close now, almost too close.

The twisted miners had become more numerous, their minds warped by the curse of the game.

"Alright," Kael whispered, crouching low. "Stealth is the name of the game here. We take them out quietly, one at a time."

Lucas nodded, trying to match Kael's movements. The older player moved like a shadow, barely making a sound as he slunk past the first few rocks and into the gloom of the mine's entrance.

Lucas followed, careful not to make a misstep, but his heart hammered in his chest. The mine was dimly lit by flickering torches on the walls, casting long, eerie shadows across the uneven ground.

The sound of pickaxes hitting stone echoed faintly in the distance, as if the miners were lost in their endless work.

"I'll take the one on the left," Kael murmured, pointing to a corrupted miner standing alone by a crate. "You handle the other. We go on three."

Lucas glanced at the other miner. It was bigger than the first one they'd fought, its body hunched, and its skin sagged in places.

The purple veins pulsed beneath its skin like a grotesque pattern of tattoos.

Kael's voice broke through his focus. "One… two…"

Before Lucas could react, Kael was already in motion, his sword flashing as he charged forward.

The first miner didn't even have time to react as Kael's blade cut through its neck, silencing it instantly.

Lucas followed suit, rushing toward his target. The miner noticed him too late, its head swiveling around in alarm.

But it was slow, sluggish — its movements exaggerated by the corruption. Lucas lunged forward with a precise strike to the chest, his dagger sinking deep into the miner's ribcage.

The beast let out a distorted howl before crumbling to the ground, leaving behind a faint glow.

[You have gained 20 EXP.]

[You have collected Miner's Shovel x1.]

Lucas breathed a sigh of relief, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Not bad, rookie," Kael said, walking up to him. "But you need to work on your timing. Don't let your guard down."

Lucas nodded, a little embarrassed but grateful for Kael's advice. "I'll keep that in mind."

They proceeded deeper into the mine, encountering more miners along the way. Each time, they took them out silently, never letting a single one alert the others.

It was a delicate dance of timing, positioning, and skill. Kael was like a ninja, his movements smooth and fluid as he picked off enemies with ease.

Lucas, on the other hand, was improving with each encounter. His skills were far from perfect, but he was learning to anticipate the enemy's movements, to strike where it counted.

His confidence was growing, and time and time again, he felt like he might actually make it in this brutal world.

As they rounded a corner, Kael held up a hand, signaling for Lucas to stop.

"Listen," Kael said in a low voice. "Classes in this game are a lot more important than people realize. Your class determines your primary skills, but it also affects how quickly you can learn new abilities. If you want to get better, you've got to pay attention to how your class interacts with your stats."

Lucas glanced at him, intrigued. "So, like, the better the class, the better the skills?"

Kael shook his head. "Not exactly. Some skills are class-specific, sure, but a lot of it comes down to how you build your character. If you're a Warrior, for example, your primary stat is Strength, but that doesn't mean you can't invest in other areas like Dexterity or Intelligence. You've got to balance things out. You can't just throw points into one thing and expect to win."

Lucas absorbed the information, nodding slowly. "So… how do you know what to focus on?"

"Trial and error," Kael said with a smirk. "The game doesn't exactly hold your hand, but if you pay attention to your abilities, you'll start to notice patterns. For example, if you're using a lot of sword skills, you'll want to focus on Dexterity and Strength. But if you're casting magic, then you'll need Intelligence and Mana Regeneration."

Lucas absorbed the knowledge, his thoughts racing. There was so much to think about. It wasn't just about surviving anymore; it was about building himself up, mastering the game's systems.

They cleared a few more miners before Kael spoke again.

"Now, as for my class," Kael continued, his voice taking on a slightly darker tone, "it's not something everyone knows about. But the Monarch class…" He trailed off, looking ahead. "It's a rare one. Used to belong to one of the beta testers, but no one knows who has it now."

Lucas blinked, startled by the information. "Monarch? What does it do?"

Kael shrugged, his eyes scanning the shadows ahead. "Not much is public knowledge. But from what I've seen, it's about commanding others. Having followers, armies. It's a high-risk, high-reward type of class. But most people who try to level it up end up getting burned out."

Lucas didn't say anything, his mind racing. He didn't dare ask any more questions, though. Kael had already said more than most would about any class, and Lucas didn't want to push it further.

The deeper they went into the mine, the more difficult the fights became.

The miners weren't just mindless automatons anymore; they were organized, hunting in packs. Kael and Lucas fought side by side, taking them down with careful precision.

By the time they reached the heart of the mine, both of them were exhausted. Their bodies ached, their stamina bars were nearly depleted, and the loot they'd collected weighed heavily in their inventories.

But there was one last group to take out — three corrupted miners guarding the entrance to the final chamber. Kael's eyes gleamed as he surveyed them.

"Last stretch," he said, wiping his brow. "Ready?"

Lucas nodded, his grip tight on his dagger. "Let's do it."

They crept forward together, timing their attacks perfectly.

Kael took the lead, his sword flashing with deadly precision as he cut down the first miner in a single strike.

Lucas darted in to handle the second, his dagger sinking deep into the miner's side.

The third one, enraged by the loss of its companions, lunged at them with a snarl, but Kael was faster. He intercepted the attack with a swift parry, knocking the miner off balance before delivering the final blow.

The last miner disintegrated into light, leaving behind a shimmering pile of loot.

[You have gained 50 EXP.]

[You have collected Nexus Coins x20.]

[You have collected Miner's Armor x1.]

Lucas grinned, feeling the rush of victory flood through him. "That's it. We're done."

Kael nodded, sheathing his sword. "Good job, rookie. Let's head back to Nexus Haven."

They turned and made their way back through the mine, their steps lighter now that the mission was complete.

The forest path was long and quiet, and the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon as they emerged from the trees.
