Lucas and Kael stood in front of the Quest Shop, bags of loot from their last mission heavy on their backs.
The doors to the shop were propped open, and the usual buzz of players could be heard from inside. Most of them were discussing their quests, comparing loot drops, or strategizing for upcoming challenges.
"Alright," Kael said, glancing at the screen. "Let's see what else we can get our hands on. We've been making some decent progress, so might as well keep the ball rolling."
Lucas nodded, eyes scanning the list of available quests. They'd just completed a mission clearing out the miners in the western forest, earning a good chunk of EXP and Nexus Coins, but they were both itching for something more challenging.
Something with a bigger payoff.
But before they could decide, a loud voice cut through the ambient chatter.
"Hey, hey! You two, get over here!"
Lucas turned to see a small group of players gathered in the corner of the shop, one of them waving excitedly toward him and Kael.
The group seemed to be in their late teens, wearing high-quality gear, the kind that indicated they'd put some serious time into the game.
There was something about their energy that caught Lucas's attention — confidence, maybe arrogance — but they definitely weren't your average low-level players.
Kael didn't hesitate. He walked over to the group, and Lucas followed, curiosity piqued.
The leader, a tall player with a deep, commanding voice, looked Kael up and down before his eyes locked onto Lucas. "You two seem like you know what you're doing. We're putting together a team for a raid, but we need two more. How about it?"
Kael raised an eyebrow but didn't respond immediately. Lucas could feel the tension in the air, and for a brief moment, he wondered if this was going to turn into a typical 'newbie shaming' session.
But instead, Kael took a moment before answering.
"Raid, huh?" Kael's voice was casual, but Lucas could tell he was sizing them up. "What's the catch?"
The leader smirked. "No catch. It's a team effort. You'll be paid based on your contribution — 100 to 500 Nexus Coins depending on the haul, and of course, there's loot to be had from the monsters we kill. We're heading into a Level 10 area, so this won't be a walk in the park."
Lucas blinked, not expecting a raid that soon. "Level 10? Isn't that a bit... much for us?"
The leader chuckled, brushing off Lucas's concern. "Don't worry. You'll have Kael with you, right?" He then turned to Kael, who was eyeing him with a faint smirk on his face.
"Yeah, that's true," Kael said, "but just so you know, we're not here to be your meat shields. If you want us on your team, we're all in, or we're out."
The leader gave a nod, as if this was all part of the process. "Fair enough. No problem here. We need the help, and I'm guessing you two can hold your own."
After a brief pause, Kael glanced at Lucas. "What do you think, rookie? You ready for something more... dangerous?"
Lucas swallowed, his nerves stirring. He had just started to get comfortable with the game, and now they were being invited to something that could easily end in disaster.
Still, the thought of a serious raid — real loot, real stakes — made his pulse race with excitement.
"Yeah," Lucas finally said, his voice steady. "Let's do it."
They left the Quest Shop together, the new team forming a loose circle around Kael and Lucas. The other players in the group introduced themselves as they walked.
There was Greg, the leader, wielding a massive two-handed axe and wearing ornate armor.
He looked like the type who could smash through enemies without breaking a sweat.
Then there was Natalie, a mage, with short blue hair and a staff glowing with arcane energy. Beside her was Evan, a rogue, quick and lean, with twin daggers strapped to his waist.
"Alright, we'll head to the portal now," Greg said, clapping his hands together. "Everyone ready?"
Kael and Lucas exchanged looks, and the latter nodded. They made their way to the Nexus portal, which shimmered with magic at the far end of Nexus Haven.
It was a glowing oval, like a rip in the fabric of reality, offering the team a gateway into the unknown.
The group stepped through one by one, and Lucas followed Kael's lead. The moment they passed through the portal, the world around them warped.
The forest they had entered was dense, filled with dark trees that blocked out the sun. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, covered in thick roots that seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy.
"So, where exactly are we headed?" Lucas asked, trying to steady his nerves.
"We're after the Abyssal Wolves," Natalie said, adjusting her staff. "They're level 10 creatures that roam in packs. The loot they drop is worth the risk."
Kael glanced around, his eyes scanning the surroundings. "Level 10, huh? This should be interesting."
Greg smirked, "We've done our homework. The wolves aren't the toughest enemies we've faced, but they're aggressive in packs. If we move quickly, we'll get in, get the loot, and get out."
The team pressed forward, and it didn't take long for the first wave of Abyssal Wolves to appear. They were enormous — larger than any wolf Lucas had seen, their fur dark as midnight and their eyes glowing an eerie red.
The group quickly spread out, preparing for the fight.
Greg shouted the signal, and the battle began. Lucas found himself dodging out of the way as one of the wolves lunged at him. He slashed at its side, landing a glancing blow, but it was Kael who moved in, delivering a swift strike that felled the beast in an instant.
"Nice," Lucas said, breathless. "I didn't even see you move."
Kael flashed him a grin. "That's the idea."
Natalie cast a spell, her staff crackling with energy as a bolt of lightning struck down on the second wolf, causing it to howl in pain before it fell to the ground, twitching.
"Keep it up, team!" Greg called out, swinging his axe through the air to land a crushing blow on another wolf. "We're making good progress."
The fight was fast and furious, but the team was cohesive, working together in perfect rhythm. Lucas was starting to understand the dynamic of a raid — each person had their role to play, and teamwork made all the difference.
By the time the last wolf was slain, the area around them was littered with loot, and the air was thick with the smell of blood. The group began collecting items, their inventories filling up quickly.
Greg turned to Kael and Lucas, a wide grin on his face. "That's the kind of haul I'm talking about. You two definitely earned your spot."
As the loot was divided and Nexus Coins were exchanged, Lucas couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. He had just participated in his first real raid, and though it had been intense, he felt stronger for it.
"Not bad for a rookie, huh?" Kael said, slapping him on the back. "You did well."
Lucas smiled, exhausted but exhilarated. "Thanks. This was... way more than I expected."
Greg handed Lucas a pouch. "Here's your share. 100 Nexus Coins for this raid, but depending on how many monsters we take down, that could go up. Consider it a start."
