Chapter 8

After a couple of glasses of red wine, my face turned slightly pink, and I looked at him with a dreamy, almost tipsy expression.

"I apologize," I murmured. "For keeping my distance because of my unsuccessful marriage."

"Let's celebrate my newfound singlehood," I added with a teasing grin. "From here on out, we'll be seeing a lot more of each other!"

Throughout my six-year marriage, I had never dined alone with Parker. We had been friends since childhood, after all. Our bond had always been strong, yet I had consistently maintained a certain boundary. Parker, aware of my marital status, had been especially respectful.

How could we manage this, while Asher and Camilla couldn't?

It seemed like a calculated test in the end, as if they believed I could be easily swayed.

Parker exhaled when he noticed my slight intoxication. "Your alcohol tolerance is quite low. Avoid challenging men to drinking contests in the future. You're bound to come out on the losing end."
