Chapter 9

I reflected deeply on everything. It became clear why I had always maintained a certain distance from Parker throughout my six-year marriage. Subconsciously, I had feelings for him that I hadn't even recognized. Out of commitment to my spouse, I had pushed away any thoughts of unfaithfulness.

However, it seemed that life offered more than just one path.

Without realizing it, I fell asleep and didn't stir until late the next day, with the sun already high overhead.

Parker grinned and said, "Miss Lanier, you stayed the night with me. Shouldn't you take responsibility for that?"

After a brief pause, I cautiously suggested, "What if we started dating?"

Parker smiled, got up, and walked to the nightstand. He opened a drawer and took out a small box. To my amazement, it contained a beautiful diamond ring.

Looking at me earnestly, he said, "Avery, I've been wanting to say this for so long, but never had the opportunity."
