CHAPTER 32

Ruth's words hung in the air, bold and unflinching. She sounded courageous, decided even, but I wasn't certain if she fully understood what she was signing up for. I couldn't help but marvel if Esther had planted this concept in her head. Maybe Esther had given her a pep talk approximately taking duty or standing up for herself. If that become the case, I owed Esther a thank you—however I wasn't prepared to hand out gratitude simply yet.

"Did a person put you as much as this?" I asked, my tone careful.

Ruth frowned, her fingers still crossed over her chest. "What do you suggest? Who could 'placed me as much as it'?"

I shrugged, leaning again towards the table. "I don't know. Esther talked to you, didn't she? Maybe she gave you some recommendation."

Ruth hesitated, her silence talking volumes.

"So she did," I stated, my voice flat.
