The Supreme General walked over to Zain, who stood at the far end of the soldiers, and stared at him with an intense look before bursting into laughter. While laughing, he affectionately wrapped his arm around Zain and gestured for them to walk towards the office.
As they walked, the soldiers left behind stared at Zain with envy. The Supreme General and Zain proceeded to the office, followed by his entourage.
The office the Supreme General entered was large and spacious, allowing everyone to sit comfortably. However, before they could settle in, they found General Garry already in the office, studying some documents at the main table. When the Supreme General walked in, General Garry stood up, saluted him, and offered him a seat on one of the scattered chairs in the office.
The Supreme General looked at Zain, then at General Garry and the rest of the entourage.
"Hello, Zain. Do you know who I am?"
Zain tried his best not to frown.
"Yes, sir. You are the Supreme General."
The Supreme General paused, as if thinking deeply about Zain's response.
"Do you know who you are?"
Is that even a question? Of course, I know who I am, dumbass, Zain thought to himself.
Clearing his throat, he replied, "Yes, sir. My name is Zain. I am a child of Xenos."
This time, the Supreme General spoke quickly.
"Zain, what makes me a Supreme General?"
Zain had heard the stories—how the Supreme General was the only known human in history to reach the SS- rank without dying, earning him his esteemed title.
Zain nodded. "What makes you a Supreme General is that you are the only known human in history to reach the SS- rank without dying. Additionally, you harnessed its power to win many wars against the Nightmare Creatures, benefiting the world."
The Supreme General smiled, revealing his stunning, white ivory teeth.
"It seems you have been taught well but not updated enough."
Suddenly, the atmosphere in the office shifted. The Supreme General's expression turned serious, and his voice became stern.
"You see, Zain, your current rank is SS. I have just confirmed it with my own eyes—that is one of my abilities."
"Abilities, sir?"
"Yes, abilities. Not all rankers have just one ability, but every ranker gains an ability when they reach S rank and beyond."
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"Now then! Let's get to the serious part. Zain, because you've now been verified as an SS-rank individual, you have access to all the privileges S-rankers enjoy—and more. However, you should know that, as an SS-rank individual, you will be tasked with dealing with monsters that S-rank scavengers and rankers cannot handle."
The Supreme General leaned forward slightly.
"I want to adopt you as my son and successor to the title of Supreme General. This will increase the stability of the world as we know it."
Zain's expression turned confused.
"Stability... adopting... how, SS?"
Looking at Zain with a sincere expression, the Supreme General continued.
"Calm down, Zain. We'll take it one step at a time. I will only adopt you as my son after you pass the test at the end of the year. As for why I want to adopt you, it is to protect you from the clans and their feuds.
Having you in a clan would tremendously boost that clan's reputation and strength, which would, in turn, cause unnecessary problems in the future. By adopting you, you would be able to live a somewhat normal life."
Zain frowned and asked, "Do I have a say in this?"
The Supreme General narrowed his eyebrows.
"Of course."
Zain continued, "Then, Supreme General, after you adopt me, can I go back to school?"
The Supreme General gave him an amicable smile.
"After you complete ten missions and defeat fifteen S-rankers."
Zain was stunned by how nonchalantly the Supreme General said it.
"How nice of you, Your Supremeness, to answer my question with such great attention."
Zain's small jab startled everyone, but the Supreme General let it slide.
With that, the meeting was over.
"The men and women seated behind me will assist you in your preparations for the test. However, your trainer will arrive tomorrow, so I will see you again in December," the Supreme General concluded.
