Keep That In Mind

Karina

The seconds tick away into minutes, and minutes tick away into eternity. I am so tense that fear that even the tiniest movement will snap me in half or shatter me completely.

So I just sit there and watch. Watch as the meat plate is being served to each guest. Watch as they pierce the pieces with forks and place them on top of the jellied bread. Watch as those little spreads travel inside the men's mouths... Watch as Selene watches me.

Silent. Cold. Cruel. Stupid.

Her long, manicured fingers are quietly tapping on the dining table, but to me, they sound like gunshots.

I don't touch the meat on purpose––she is waiting for the silver drop to take effect and accuse me of poisoning the Council, backing it off with the fact that I did not touch the meat. I will let her have that little moment of triumph. Because the higher she gets right now, the harder her fall will be later.

I'll savour it then.
