He maintained a steady pace while walking with the girl through the busy streets of Etarion heading to the hunter's association, but his thoughts were racing and he was unsure of what to do at this point. They pretended nothing out of the ordinary was occurring as they walked, each lost in their own thoughts.
But his mind was racing. Why was she interested in him, and who was this "mistress," anyway? The girl next to him moved through the crowd with such ease that it seemed like she was no stranger to the city.
His eyes narrowed as he watched her skip by like a happy child; she was doing nothing to improve his circumstances, and he couldn't help but feel irritated because he was looking for answers only to get more questions instead and they were only making things more difficult for him.
"You are quiet and I see that you are taking this rather well," She remarked breaking the silence, with a teasing gleam within her eyes, almost as though she was enjoying his predicament.
Nova scoffed. "Not really. I am just busy thinking, something you people seem to not do before doing things, I am trying to get through my day without unnecessary complications, but it seems as though that is an impossible thought at the moment, when you people are now involved."
"I understand, I really do, despite my demeanor, I know how you feel, but it is too late for that," she said, flashing a grin. "You already caught her interest since she met you that day. And when the mistress takes an interest in someone, it usually means something big is about to happen."
"You keep mentioning her, I can only believe it is the girl with the mask, so I will ask this and who exactly is your mistress?" He asked as he eyed her warily.
The girl chuckled. "You are right, but I cannot tell you outright. If you truly want to know, you must find out for yourself."
Nova rolled his eyes and scoffed. "Of course, I would, not surprising."
As they approached the hunter's Association, he sensed a change in the atmosphere and his eyes narrowed as he looked around the area. There were more guards outside than usual, and people whispered to each other as they passed. Something happened and he was getting a bad feeling, after all, nothing was going the way he wanted anymore.
The building was a large imposing one within the midst of the city, basically radiating authority, the yard was big, filled with all sorts of areas, including a training ground.
Before he could ask anyone, the association's large and heavy wooden doors at the entrance swung open, and a group of armored individuals emerged. At the center of them stood a man dressed in dark blue robes with silver embroidery—one of the association's top officials. His stern gaze swept across the assembled crowd, landing directly at Nova with his eyes narrowed, causing Nova to raise a brow, wondering what was going on.
"You there, necromancer," the official called out, his voice authoritative. "Step forward."
Nova's brow furrowed in confusion, and he gulped, his palms sweating slightly; he was only human, and it was natural for him to react that way, though he had an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach, but he complied, stepping toward the official.
The girl beside him instinctively moved back, blending into the crowd with a knowing smirk and a subtle nod that said, "Be careful."
"You were involved in the events that took place at the headquarters, were you not?" The official inquired, folding his arms in front of his chest with piercing eyes, and Nova exhaled deeply.
'Not again, I thought I had gone over this already; why am I being questioned again? Nova clenched his fists beside him, wondering if he could make it here without messing up.
Nova chose his next words carefully. "I was present, but involved? Not exactly. If you mean the break-in, I was just caught up in the chaos, as I explained during the interrogation; I had nothing to do with it, and there were witnesses present, so if you are going to accuse me, I suggest you choose your words carefully," He responded, his tone firm despite his unease.
The official raised a brow at his tone, as he studied him for a moment longer than necessary, and then nodded. "Regardless, your presence was acknowledged I get that you were not directly involved, but I still had to check for myself, it is necessary and for precautions. And now that you have completed your trial, given what you are, there are some... considerations to be made."
Nova felt uneasy at his last sentence. "What kind of considerations?" He asked, tentatively.
"Inside," the official responded, turning on his heel as he walked deeper into the building. "We will discuss this further in private."
Nova hesitated for a split second before following him into the building, not before glancing back at the girl, while the door closed behind him. As he walked past the entrance, he looked around and saw how big the place was inside, a different section for each thing, with many people moving around, hunters going and coming.
He looked as some of them exchanged reports, collecting bounties at different counters, while some began preparing for their next mission, some of them looked like experienced hunters, while others looked like newbies, under the others. But unlike them, he was being led deeper into the building, past the usual meeting rooms and into a private chamber reserved for official matters.
However, seeing that, something deep within him, told him his life was about to become even more complicated than it already was, he had no idea in what way that would be, but he could tell it involved the nature of his abilities, given all hat he had heard and seen so far, he could not rule out the possibility, especially with what the elder had said to him the day before as well, he only hoped it would not hinder his chances.
