Chapter 4

Alert internet users swiftly uncovered Kathy's location through her online activity. They promptly linked her to the individual who had spiked Chester's drink that evening.

Even before 'Mr. Miles' arrived at her residence, opportunists seeking favor were already swarming her home.

Agents approached Kathy, proposing partnership deals, lauding her innocent appearance and forecasting her imminent rise to stardom.

Others, keen to ingratiate themselves with the Miles clan, extended invitations for Kathy to dine at upscale establishments, requesting her to advocate on their behalf to Chester.

Gossip spread rapidly across the web. Many speculated that Chester would terminate his engagement to the Chandler family.

Within 24 hours, Kathy amassed millions of followers, becoming the latest internet phenomenon.

Amid the frenzy, she feigned caution against rumor-mongering, projecting an air of cool detachment that quickly garnered a devoted fanbase.

Behind the scenes, her notoriety only intensified.

I could no longer remain passive. I hurried to transfer my household registration away from my parents' residence.

That night, upon returning to collect my belongings, I found my parents practically glowing with excitement.

Glued to their phones, they chuckled incessantly at online comments, seemingly envisioning themselves as future in-laws to the Miles Family.

Ignoring them, I headed straight to my room to pack my things.

Noticing my actions, Mom scoffed dismissively. "You're clueless about enjoying life. You'll spend your days toiling fruitlessly, a burden to this family."

Dad exhaled deeply, his face etched with disappointment. "When will you achieve even half of your sister's success? We could have been neighbors with the Miles Family by now!"

Kathy emerged from her room, her face covered in an expensive beauty mask, and stood before me with an air of superiority.

"You're still in the dark, aren't you? Mr. Miles has already messaged me, expressing his desire to meet."

"He must have realized I was his helper that night, but he's not upset. He might have been interested in me all along!"

"I've just taken a pregnancy test. It's positive."

"You'd better start sucking up to me while you still can."

"After all, you're my sister. Once I'm part of the Miles Family, securing you a position as a maid won't be difficult."

Her mention of the positive test result made my heart sink. I unconsciously touched my stomach, trying to conceal my unease.

"The online rumors, you're behind them, aren't you? Don't you realize how formidable Miles Enterprises' legal team is? You're not helping our parents; you're dragging the entire family down with you."

As expected, just as I finished speaking...

Mom had just seen Miles Enterprises' official statement online. It warned that anyone continuing to spread rumors would face legal action from the Miles Family.

The previously bustling comments section suddenly went silent. All of Kathy's posts were removed, and her account was suspended.

Only then did Kathy begin to panic.

Clinging to her pride, she hesitated before opening her chat window, but couldn't bring herself to message Chester.

As our parents anxiously hovered around her, inquiring about the situation, Chester finally reached out to her.

[I'm sending someone to collect you. Be ready outside in five minutes.]

Kathy's expression, which had momentarily faltered, brightened once again. She waved her phone in front of me with a smug grin.

"See that? The Miles Family is influential. It's natural they want to keep things discreet. But look, my husband-to-be can't wait to explain everything to me in person!"

"A timid and useless person like you wouldn't even be fit to carry my shoes! Get out of my sight!"

She shoved me aside and retreated to her room to change.

My parents immediately turned their attention to me.

"What's the point of having you as a daughter if you can't even support your sister? Why did we bother raising you?"

"Just leave already! We don't want to look at you anymore!"

Mom was so emotional, her eyes welling up with tears.

"This bold move was definitely the right choice! We might be moving into a mansion tonight!"

Dad laughed heartily, holding up Kathy's positive pregnancy test and exclaimed, "I never dared to dream of this! It's the Miles Family! We're about to enter high society!"

"Darling, take a look! How does this outfit look for our daughter's wedding? Do you think it'll be embarrassing?"

"When our grandchild is born, what should we give as a gift? We can't let our in-laws think poorly of us!"

As they excitedly planned for the future, I quietly returned to my room to gather my belongings.

As I left the house, I trailed behind them at a distance.

By the time we reached the ground floor, we were surrounded by curious neighbors. Their voices were a strange mixture of admiration and jealousy.

"How fortunate you are to have such a daughter! I saw the news online, and if my daughter could marry into the Miles Family, I'd be grinning in my sleep!"

"You two are positively radiant with joy, you even look younger! The gray hairs seem to have vanished!"

"If I had known it would turn out like this, I would've encouraged my daughter to try too! I thought Mr. Miles was so hard to please, but in the end, he's still a man—he can't resist temptation!"

I felt a wave of nausea rise in my throat, fighting the urge to retch.

My parents were beaming, eagerly promising that the wedding would be a grand celebration for our neighbors.

Amidst their chatter, several police vehicles arrived with sirens blaring.

The lead officer displayed his badge and spoke sternly, "Which one of you is Miss Kathy Holmes? She's suspected of spreading false information and using illegal substances. We need her to come with us for questioning."
