As those words were uttered, the admiring chatter around us ceased abruptly. Our neighbors exchanged worried looks, subconsciously stepping back, eager to avoid getting involved in the unfolding drama.
My parents were visibly shaken. They clutched Kathy's arms firmly. "Kathy, what's happening? Who notified the authorities? Wasn't Mr. Miles supposed to take you out? This must be some sort of mistake, right?"
Kathy's confident expression faltered, her eyes flashing from fear to disdain, as if she couldn't care less about the situation.
She spoke with an air of superiority, her voice dripping with conceit, "I'm Kathy Holmes. You've got this all wrong! What accusations? There's nothing like that. I'm the soon-to-be Mrs. Miles, Mr. Miles's betrothed. Are you even aware of who the Miles Family is?"
