"Steven, we've exhausted all topics of conversation," I stated flatly, my tone emotionless.
However, Steven quickly replied on the phone, "Cherry, you wouldn't want to jeopardize the partnership between our families, would you?"
I chuckled at his statement. Was he unaware that I held all the cards regarding our companies' collaboration?
To my surprise, after I turned him down, he showed up at my office unannounced the following day.
"Mr. Jones," I addressed him frostily, "isn't it rude to barge into my office without an invitation?"
I motioned for my assistant to exit, leaving just the two of us in the room.
Steven's eyes grew slightly bloodshot as he gazed at me. "Cherry, after you disappeared, I searched for you. Did you... terminate our baby?" His voice quivered with rage.
I observed the anger in his eyes and let out an incredulous laugh.
"So that's why you're here?" I replied icily. "You want to know? Alright. I didn't want my child to be fatherless. Is that enough for you?"
My response seemed to drain the blood from his face.
"Cherry, we both started with nothing. You understand how challenging it is for people like us to climb the social ladder!" he exclaimed. "I agreed to wed Giselle, but I never planned to give you up!"
His proclamation was ridiculous.
"And what are you trying to say?" I asked, my voice remaining cold and firm.
"Cherry, I still have feelings for you. I don't love Giselle!" he insisted. "If you return, we can still build a life together—even have our child! My marriage to Giselle is just a means to an end for us!"
Hearing his shameless explanation, I couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"Get out, Steven," I commanded, gesturing towards the exit.
At that moment, any remaining illusions or affection I had for him crumbled completely. I had been blind to his true character.
He looked at me desperately. "Cherry, are you aware of how close Giselle is to your company's CEO? She could have you fired with just one word!"
"Cherry, you should listen to me. If she destroys your career, you'll still have me to fall back on!"
His words were so absurd they were almost humorous.
"No thanks, Steven," I said resolutely. "Be assured, regardless of what happens, I'll never seek your assistance."
Before I could usher him out, my office door burst open again. This time, it was Giselle.
She stormed in, her eyes ablaze with anger. "I knew it! You're the temptress trying to lure my husband away!"
I regarded her coldly and stated, "I have no interest in your spouse. Both of you, please exit."
"Exit?!" she shrieked. "We came here for a business deal, not for you to entice my man!"
She continued ranting, "Where's your superior? I demand to see him immediately! I'll ensure you're dismissed!"
Her outburst was pitiful, and I watched her with icy contempt.
Steven rushed to pacify her. "Giselle, let's go. There's nothing between Cherry and me!"
