Max perched on the bed's edge, his gaze fixed on the divorce documents in his grasp. His thoughts whirled, but each one led nowhere. Cassie had vanished, leaving him clueless about where to begin searching.
His initial impulse was to contact someone, anyone connected to Cassie, but as he reached for his phone, he hesitated. Who could he call? Her companions? But... who were they?
It dawned on him suddenly. He was unaware of her friends!
He'd never bothered to inquire. They had a few shared acquaintances from social gatherings, but none close enough to Cassie to know her whereabouts. And her pre-marriage close friends? They'd gradually faded away until it was just the two of them. She'd lost touch with them.
Max clenched his jaw in exasperation. He knew Cassie worked from home, but what exactly did she do? Where was she employed? He had no clue. When she'd spoken about her day, he'd nodded absentmindedly, never showing interest or asking questions.
