Chapter 8

(Cassie's Perspective)

I tuned out Violet's chatter, barely listening until she suddenly asked, "You and Max have been married for quite some time now. Why haven't you two had a baby yet?"

My grip on my sweater tightened involuntarily. I was momentarily speechless, then managed to reply, "That's not an appropriate question to ask."

"But everyone's curious, Cassie," Violet persisted, clearly trying to provoke me. "You've been together for ages. And you adore children, don't you? You'd be an excellent mother."

"Enough!" I exclaimed, turning to face her fully. She seemed taken aback by my sharp tone.

"It's not your place to pry into other people's personal matters," I continued, my voice quivering with barely contained emotions. "You have no right to ask such invasive questions."

Violet scoffed and left with a smirk on her face.

As soon as the door closed, I sank onto the sofa, burying my face in my hands. I remained that way for a while, struggling to keep my emotions in check.
