Chapter : Stay Close

The night air was thick with tension, the silver glow of the moon casting long shadows across the forest floor. Rain could feel the weight of Nathaniel's presence behind him, the heat of the Alpha King's body too close, too consuming. He wanted to move away, to put distance between them, but his body betrayed him, rooted in place by something far stronger than logic.

Nathaniel's fingers brushed against the mark on Rain's wrist, sending a jolt of sensation through his entire being. The touch was deliberate, slow, as if he was savoring the connection, the bond that neither of them could sever.

"You feel it too," Nathaniel murmured, his voice low, almost predatory. "Don't deny it."

Rain's breath hitched, his silver eyes narrowing as he turned to glare at the Alpha King. "Feeling something doesn't mean I want it."

Nathaniel chuckled, dark and knowing. "Want has nothing to do with it." His grip tightened slightly, his thumb tracing over the mark. "This bond—this pull between us—it's beyond want. It's fate."

Rain yanked his arm free, his skin burning where Nathaniel had touched. "Fate?" he scoffed, stepping back. "You talk about fate as if you weren't the one who forced this upon me."

Nathaniel's gaze darkened, the amusement fading from his expression. "And yet, here you stand, trembling from just a touch. Tell me, Rain, do you truly think you can resist what's already in motion?"

Rain hated the way his body responded to those words, to that deep, commanding tone. The way his heart pounded against his ribcage, the way his breath grew unsteady. He clenched his fists, digging his nails into his palms, forcing himself to focus.

"You may have marked me, but you will never own me," he growled.

Nathaniel took a step closer, closing the distance between them once more. "Then stop running," he murmured, his breath ghosting over Rain's skin. "Stop pretending you don't crave the fire between us as much as I do."

Rain's jaw clenched. He wouldn't give Nathaniel the satisfaction of an answer. He turned sharply on his heel, ready to walk away, to put space between them before his resolve wavered any further.

But the moment he moved, Nathaniel's hand shot out, grabbing him by the wrist and spinning him back around. Rain barely had time to react before he was pulled flush against the Alpha King's chest, their bodies colliding in a heated clash of dominance and defiance.

A sharp inhale was the only sound Rain made before Nathaniel's lips crashed against his.

The kiss was brutal, possessive—a war in itself. Rain's hands shot up, gripping Nathaniel's shoulders, torn between pushing him away and pulling him closer. Heat surged through him, raw and consuming, an inferno that threatened to swallow him whole.

For a moment, just a moment, he let himself drown in it.

Then, with a sharp growl, he shoved Nathaniel back, breathing hard. His lips tingled, his mind screamed at him, but his body—his traitorous body—craved more.

Nathaniel licked his lips, eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "Now tell me again that you feel nothing."

Rain wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, glaring daggers at him. "You're insufferable."

Nathaniel smirked. "And you're mine."

Before Rain could snap back, a sudden shift in the air made them both tense. A presence—dark, sinister—was approaching fast. The scent of blood and danger thickened the night.

The enemy was here.

Nathaniel's expression hardened instantly, the teasing arrogance vanishing as his Alpha instincts took over. "Stay close."

Rain didn't argue. He could feel it too—the storm that was about to descend upon them. And for the first time, standing beside the Alpha King, he wasn't sure if he was more afraid of the coming battle—or of the war raging within himself.
