The remnants of their battle in the abandoned warehouse still lingered in the air as Ryo and his team regrouped at the dojo. Exhausted but triumphant, they had barely begun to process their victory against the mysterious hooded figure before reality came crashing back.
Akira paced the room, her usual calm replaced by visible tension. "That portal wasn't just an attack. It was a message. Someone, or something, is coming."
Kenji, munching on a bag of chips, raised an eyebrow. "You think it's another 'ultimate evil' type? I'm starting to lose track of how many of those we've faced."
"Kenji, this isn't a joke," Akira snapped, her daggers glinting in the morning light.
"I'm not joking!" he said, holding up the chips. "I'm stress-eating because someone's gotta keep the humor alive around here!"
Ryo, leaning against the wall with his katana in hand, sighed. "Enough, both of you. Akira's right. Whoever that guy was, he wasn't bluffing. And that portal… it felt like it was calling to me."
Sora, who had been silent, spoke up. "Do you think it's connected to your Shadow Flame? It seemed like he knew a lot about your abilities."
Ryo's grip tightened on the hilt of his sword. "If it is, we can't let them use me—or it—for whatever they're planning."

A New Threat Emerges
Just as the team began strategizing, a loud knock echoed through the dojo. Kael opened the door to find a bloodied member of the Paranormal Task Force stumbling inside.
"They're… coming," the agent gasped, clutching their side.
"Who?" Akira demanded, rushing to their aid.
"Kurogami. They've unleashed something… something worse than we've ever seen. The Shadowborne."
"The Shadowborne?" Ryo echoed, his heart sinking.
The agent nodded weakly. "They're creatures born from the same darkness as your Shadow Flame. And they're hunting you."
The agent collapsed, unconscious, leaving the team in stunned silence.

The Ambush
That night, the city fell eerily quiet. The streets, usually bustling with life, were deserted. A cold wind howled through the alleyways as Ryo and his team made their way toward the Old Shinto Shrine—a location scrawled on a cryptic note found on the Paranormal Task Force agent.
The shrine stood in ruins, its once-majestic gates overrun with vines and decay. The moon hung low, casting a silvery glow over the area.
"I've got a bad feeling about this," Kenji muttered, frying pan at the ready.
"You always have a bad feeling," Akira shot back, scanning the shadows.
"Yeah, but this time it's justified," Kenji said, pointing to the glowing red eyes appearing in the darkness.
Out of the shadows emerged the Shadowborne—twisted, monstrous figures with elongated limbs and smoky, black bodies. Their claws glinted like obsidian, and their guttural growls sent chills down the team's spines.
"Guess it's showtime," Ryo said, igniting his katana with the Shadow Flame.
The first Shadowborne lunged, its claws slashing through the air. Ryo ducked, countering with a fiery upward strike that disintegrated the creature on contact.
"Take that!" Kenji shouted, smashing another creature with his frying pan. "Who knew breakfast tools were this effective?"
Sora loosed a volley of flaming arrows, each one striking true and lighting up the battlefield. Akira danced through the fray, her daggers flashing like silver streaks as she dispatched enemies with precision.
Despite their efforts, the Shadowborne kept coming, their numbers seemingly endless.
"Ryo, they're after you!" Akira shouted, taking down two creatures at once.
Ryo clenched his teeth, his flames burning brighter. "Then let's give them what they want!"

The Shadow Master Revealed
As the team fought valiantly, a deep, resonant laugh echoed through the shrine. The remaining Shadowborne froze, retreating into the shadows.
"Impressive," a voice said, dripping with malice. "But futile."
From the shadows stepped a figure cloaked in darkness, their eyes glowing with the same red intensity as the Shadowborne.
"Let me guess," Ryo said, panting. "You're the big boss?"
The figure chuckled. "I am Kage no Ō, the Master of Shadows. And you, Ryo Tanaka, are the key to my ascension."
"Why does everyone keep saying that?" Ryo groaned, pointing his katana at the figure. "Newsflash: I'm not a key. I'm a guy with a sword, and I'm about to use it on you."
Kage no Ō smirked, raising a hand. The shadows around him surged, forming a massive, clawed hand that swiped at Ryo.
Ryo dodged, barely avoiding the attack, and countered with a fiery slash. The flames collided with the shadow hand, creating an explosion that shook the shrine.

The Awakening
As the battle raged, Ryo felt a surge of power building within him. The Shadow Flame burned hotter, its black-and-red hues intensifying.
"Ryo!" Sora shouted. "Your sword!"
Looking down, Ryo saw the katana glowing, the Shadow Flame pulsing in sync with his heartbeat.
"What's happening?" he muttered.
"You're evolving," Kage no Ō said, his voice filled with amusement. "The Shadow Flame is awakening. Soon, you'll belong to me."
"Not a chance," Ryo growled.
He closed his eyes, focusing on the energy coursing through him. The katana shifted, its blade elongating and splitting into two fiery edges.
When Ryo opened his eyes, they glowed with the same intensity as the Shadow Flame.
"Let's finish this," he said, his voice steady.
