Chapter 14

In the following months, Zane vanished without a trace, and I received no communication from him. However, I remained indifferent. My attention was fully devoted to my role in the Healer's Circle as I attempted to erase my former life from memory.

"Selena, you must realize this isn't good for you," Jason remarked, standing next to me while I carefully sliced a beet for an experimental concoction.

"Mm-hmm," I replied distractedly, concentrating on cutting with precision to prevent errors.

"You can't continue using your job as a means to avoid engaging with the world," Jason reprimanded. "You're constantly absorbed in your tasks - from dawn till dusk - it's detrimental to your well-being, and you're aware of that."

"Mm-hmm," I mumbled once more, narrowing my eyes in focus.

Jason scoffed and swiftly removed the knife from my grasp. "You're not even paying attention, Selena."

"Jason, please," I objected, reaching out to reclaim the knife. "I heard you, I was listening."
