Jason's brow creased as he glanced my way. "I didn't forget, but Selena needs my assistance. I was just about to escort her home."
Michelle's frown deepened, and she shot me a subtle look of disapproval. "But Jason, you made a promise. I really require your help."
I quickly intervened, not wanting to cause any friction between them. "It's fine, Jason. You should assist her. I can make my way home alone," I said, forcing a smile despite the tightness in my chest.
Jason turned back to me, his expression concerned. "No, I'm accompanying you home," he stated firmly.
Michelle was clearly displeased with his response. Her eyes welled up as she sniffled. "But Jason, you gave your word," she whined, her pout intensifying.
Jason exhaled in frustration. "Your assignment isn't due for another week. It doesn't have to be completed today."
Michelle's pout wavered slightly, evidently caught off guard by Jason's objection.
