Chapter 3

I regained consciousness in a hospital room at Ailfa Mount.

"Elizabeth, care for some water?" A familiar voice inquired.

"Kayla?" It was Kayla Watson, my colleague. She'd discovered me unconscious near the exit and brought me to the hospital.

"How did you end up in that ancient woodland?" Kayla asked, confused.

"It's a long story," I replied.

Suddenly, Edward's voice echoed from the hallway.

"Where is she?"

Kayla promptly stepped out. "Edward, your spouse is in here."

The room's entrance was ajar. I glimpsed Edward, his gaze icy cold.

Someone said, "Edward, Jessica's in Room 8."

"How is she doing?" Edward inquired.

The person answered, "She's okay, just a bit chilly."

"That's a relief." Edward headed straight for Room 8.

Kayla was taken aback. "Why didn't your husband come to see you?"

I gave a sad smile, offering no explanation.

The following day around noon, I spotted Edward walking down the corridor with a packed meal. He passed by without so much as a glance, as if I were invisible.

I had purchased that very lunchbox.

I used to frequently visit the rescue unit, bringing food for Edward.

Now, he was carrying my lunchbox, delivering a meal to his beloved.

The irony was palpable!

As I prepared for bed around 10 PM, Jessica barged into my room.

"What do you want?" I asked.

Jessica sneered, "I'm surprised you're so resilient. Falling off a cliff didn't finish you off."

I retorted, "Are you going to confess, or should I contact the authorities?"

Jessica chuckled, "Do you have any proof? Who would believe you?"

"The truth always comes to light eventually," I stated.

Jessica boasted, "The truth? The current truth is that you led me into Ailfa Mount and attempted to murder me. I barely escaped and was rescued.

"By the way, are you suffering now? Edward chose to save me instead of you."

After my previous life experience, I was completely disenchanted with Edward. If not for the strange mist, I wouldn't have sought Edward's help.

"Are you done? Leave when you're finished," I said coldly.

Just then, familiar, measured footsteps approached from the corridor. It was Edward.

Abruptly, Jessica slapped herself.

She then collapsed to the floor, looking at me tearfully. "Edward and I are just friends, Elizabeth. I understand your disbelief. But why did you strike me?"

My door swung open.

Edward dropped the food he was carrying and rushed to Jessica's aid. "Elizabeth, you're cruel and malicious. Jessica did nothing wrong. Why did you hit her? Can't you see she's still traumatized?"

"Wasn't I traumatized? Am I physically recovered?" I countered.

Edward replied, "You deserved it. If you hadn't lured Jessica into that primeval forest, none of this would have happened."

"Do you believe everything she says?" I challenged.

Edward responded firmly, "Yes, Jessica doesn't lie."

I shouted, "Fine. I won't argue with you two. You're both terrible. Get out of here. I don't want to see either of you."

"My face hurts," Jessica whimpered, clutching her cheek in distress.

Edward, enraged, raised his hand and slapped me hard.

The impact left me dazed, and I stumbled to the ground. A sharp pain shot through my abdomen. Looking down, I saw blood flowing between my legs.
