"Hey, do you think he would get selected?"
"I doubt it! Didn't you hear that this post is just a ghost vacancy? There is no way anyone's gonna get selected this time either."
"Fuck! I feel sorry for that kid, but he better not have any expectations from this job."
Liam sat in his seat as he heard people talk around the office. And for the first time in a while, he felt irritated because he had better senses than a normal person.
Hearing about what the other workers were saying put a damper on his mood, and he did not even want to give this interview.
But because he had come all the way here anyway, he decided to try out his luck one last time. After all, he could get lucky and get selected…right? There was that possibility.
However, as soon as he took a seat at the interview table, Liam knew that it was wishful thinking on his part to believe that these people would be nice to him.
The people taking the interview were already giggling while looking at his name on the application form he had filled out.
"So, Mister Sanders snicker, what an amusing name cough. Anyway, Mister Liam Sanders, that is your name, right? May I ask why you applied for our company when you are clearly overqualified and have 4 years of experience in the field? Surely, you could have gotten a better job by now."
One of the interviewers asked, and Liam turned his head toward the man sitting at the corner of the table uncomfortably.
In his opinion, there was no need for an interview at his level to have 5 people sitting and asking him questions. Even 3 was overkill.
Still, Liam had vowed to do his best, so he would at least try to get through this without being ridiculed by these people…for now.
"I applied for this position because it is close to home. Other places that have better opportunities are too far away, and I would rather not move too far away. On that note, I assure you that I won't ever be late to work because I live close by."
Liam tried to lighten the situation and convey that it would be in the company's best interest to choose him, but he could tell that the company did not look interested, even if they gave him a second glance after he reassured them about not being late.
"Hmm, it is a good point you bring up, Mister Sanders. We would like a little more time to discuss this among ourselves before we tell you if you have been selected as our candidate or not. In the meantime, how about you head back home? We will call you with good news soon."
The interviewer spoke in such a polite voice that anyone would think they were selected for the position they had auditioned for. But Liam was not about to fall for this trick.
He had been dealing with assholes like these long enough to be able to tell that they had no intention of selecting him or anyone else. This vacancy was just a way for them to line their pockets.
"I see. I will wait for good news."
Liam gritted his teeth as he spoke those words. His desire to burn this place to the ground was enough to make him pause and realize that he needed to get out fast.
As he walked out into the hallway, Liam felt some of his irritated magic leave, and someone inside the room yelled out, complaining how the computer he had been working on exploded.
Thankfully, no one had been hurt, but instead of feeling guilty, Liam felt a sense of satisfaction at being able to waste this company's time and resources with this small accident.
But satisfying his annoyance at the company did not magically make his situation any better. He still had to face the threat that was unemployment.
Sigh
"What do I do now? With my powers, holding a normal job does not feel like a possibility anymore. Even the smallest thing causes me to lose my temper, and my magic goes on a rampage. What do I do about this?"
Liam questioned, but even the system did not answer him, making Liam realize that it was of no use to think about it any longer.
As he walked, Liam felt something reaching for his wrist. He noticed the presence in time and tried to pull his hand away.
But the other person reaching for him was too fast, and he managed to grab Liam's hand and pull his body toward a small plant-based shop.
"Hey, young man. You seem like a steady person with a lot of physical strength. Someone like you can do well to grow their own food and not worry about the hiking vegetable and fruit prices. How about it? Would you like to buy some seeds?"
The old man who managed to drag Liam all the way to his small shop looked incredibly fragile, and he lacked any substantial magic as well.
As far as Liam could tell, the old man in front of him was an ordinary old man with extraordinary strength.
"Young man, you should think about your future and plant some of these seeds. Who knows what is mixed in the vegetables sold in the market? Here, try one of the ones I've grown. It looks fresh, right?"
Liam was given no time to breathe by the old man before he had a tomato shoved in front of his face. It looked red and ripe…but that was beside the point. It was not what Liam was here for. He was here for…nothing, actually.
He had been dragged to this small shop.
"I am sorry, but I am not someone with a green thumb. How about I-"
The old man gave Liam a look that told him that he had no right to refuse the old man's offer. And it was at that second that Liam knew he had lost.
