The office atmosphere felt light that day. Hana had finished her tasks early, and as she walked out, a few colleagues waved her goodbye, including Andri, a friendly coworker who liked to joke around.
"Take care, Hana. Don't overwork yourself," Andri said with a playful grin.
"Thanks, Andri. You too," Hana replied with a polite smile.
Unbeknownst to her, someone was watching from a distance.
Alexei, who had been waiting in his car, noticed the exchange. His jaw tightened as he observed the interaction. A strange tension brewed within him.
When Hana finally entered the car and sat beside him, she sensed something was off. Alexei didn't greet her as usual, and the silence felt heavy.
"Is something wrong, Alexei?" Hana asked cautiously.
Alexei's eyes remained on the road as he started driving. "Nothing. Just thinking."
"About what?"
He glanced at her briefly, his expression unreadable. "About that guy you were talking to. You seemed pretty close."
Hana was taken aback. "Andri? He's just a coworker. We were only saying goodbye."
Alexei didn't seem convinced. "I don't like seeing other men getting too close to you."
Hana frowned. "Alexei, you're overreacting. He's just a friend."
There was a long pause before Alexei spoke again, his voice eerily calm. "I just want to make sure you know your place. You're mine, Hana. No one else should have that kind of access to you."
Hana felt a chill run down her spine. This was a side of Alexei she hadn't seen before, and it frightened her.
That night felt cold, even though the air inside Alexei's villa was warm. After their strange conversation, Hana decided to rest in the guest room, as she usually did since she started staying at Alexei's villa. However, just as she was about to close the door, Alexei appeared in the doorway, his expression serious.
"Hana," Alexei said slowly, his tone soft but firm. "I want you to sleep in my room tonight."
Hana froze for a moment, feeling her heartbeat quicken. The request wasn't something usual, and somehow, fear started creeping into her. She knew Alexei could be very persuasive, even insistent when he wanted something.
"Alexei… I'm tired. Maybe another time," Hana replied as calmly as possible.
But Alexei didn't budge. He stood there, his gaze a mix of pleading and demanding. "I just want us to be together. You don't have to be afraid. I'll take care of you."
Hana felt torn. Part of her wanted to refuse, to keep the boundaries she had always upheld. Yet another part feared upsetting or angering Alexei. She had seen how quickly his demeanor could change, and that uncertainty made her hesitate.
"Alright," Hana finally said, though her heart was still filled with doubt.
Alexei smiled in satisfaction and gently took her hand. "You won't regret it."
Inside Alexei's room, the atmosphere was eerily quiet. Hana sat on the edge of the bed, feeling uneasy. Alexei walked to the other side of the room, turning on a small lamp on the nightstand, casting a dim and intimate glow.
"It's only a matter of time, Hana. You'll get used to it," Alexei said as he sat beside her.
Hana forced a small smile, but it felt strained. Deep inside, she questioned whether any of this was right. Was moving in with Alexei the right decision? Why did she always feel an inexplicable fear whenever Alexei showed his darker side?
Alexei pulled the blanket over both of them. "Go to sleep. I'm here."
Hana lay down, her emotions swirling in conflict. She felt trapped between sweet love and the dark shadows that seemed to envelop their relationship. On one hand, Alexei was so attentive and made her feel special, but on the other, something about him made her feel not entirely safe.
As Alexei wrapped his arms tightly around her, Hana could only stare at the dark ceiling, silently asking herself: Is this right? Am I making a mistake by loving this man?
And that night, though her body was in Alexei's embrace, her mind wandered far, searching for answers to the unease growing in her heart.
