Silas tried to speak, but found himself at a loss for words.
He could only bow his head in defeat.

I couldn't suppress a chuckle. This phrase had become all too familiar.
Following the death of Jane's father, Silas vanished on the night of our engagement celebration, stating, "Thea, Jane's in trouble, I need to check on her."
During our wedding ceremony, Jane once again threatened to end her life, and after escorting me to our new home, Silas disappeared for the entire night.
